Aquatic jousting
« on: 2008-07-04, 02:08:14 »
So Kat and I took a trip over to REI today (shopped for hiking shoes, etc), and as usual we drooled over some of the really nice kayaks. On the way out, I made the comment "I wonder if you can fit a sword in those kayaks", which led to a discussion about how jousting could be accomplished in a kayak. I think we agreed that the most workable solution would be to paddle really hard, and then couch the paddle at the last second.

So... kayak-jousting. Who's with me? ? ? ?

lol :)

Dang, Ed, what a great idea!  I wish I had known!  I was out kayaking yesterday afternoon.  Y'all could have joined me.   8)

You guys never knew Coach Steve, my predecessor at VAF. We were at Dan Gilbert's place, who had a pool in his backyard, and Steve, seeing that Dan owned two Kayaks, immediately challenged Matt Beltz to a naval battle with kayaks, shinai and masks. He laid down the rules that the inflatable Shamu in the water was Denmark, and that the two must complete one full circle around it before engaging forces. All of this was on the spot.

You know, I think I remember you describing that once before. I had forgotten about that. What a great idea! :)

I was out at our little place on Virginia's Northern Neck.  10 minute kayak ride from the backyard to the Potomac.

Excellent. I haven't been out on a kayak or canoe in quite some time. I always enjoyed it though.

I was once out with a canoe on the sea. It was close to the shore, but damn, it was tiring as hell. After a few minutes of paddling through the waves, I was already back at the beach.
