Quote
    *  This project was started to answer a couple of simple questions about when particular pieces of armour came into and went out of fashion. In particular I was interested in the date range of the centrally hinged visor on bascinets and when uncovered globose body defenses came into popularity.

    * While searching for the answers to these questions I thought it might be interesting to examine all the parts of armour in the age of the transition from mail to plate. What follows is the result of that search.

    * I have done my best to be as methodical and complete as possible. However some errors are certainly going to be present. For those errors I take full responsibility.

    * The dates used for this analysis were based on the date of the creation of the effigy (where available) rather than the date of death of the person portrayed.

    * The data is inclusive of both flat monumental brasses and three dimensional monumental effigies.

Awesome find! I'm looking it over. I could really pick a specific decade depending on whether I add elbow cops, etc. It's a shame it doesn't go back into the 13th C at least a little bit, but it's the 14th where things start changing rapidly, so I can understand that.

I'd love to get some reliable info on when my style of great helm went out of style. We know of course that it evolved into other types of jousting helms, and the pembridge style great helm worn with a bascinet existed later than the simple great helm I use.

In his charts, the great helm looks like a minor fad later in the 14th, but of course we know they were very common in the 13th leading into the 14th. I just think they weren't common in effigies because they wanted to show the face, so you tend to see the coif alone (EDIT: Hah, I just noticed he says exactly that). He also comments that the mail coif in most cases would have a great helm, making it look like they saw pretty solid use through the entire 14th, but like I said, that contains the later styles than the one I use.

Very fascinating page!

EDIT: It also confirms that I'm totally fudging the date with my spaulders... they don't really start appearing until the 1340's, but most of the rest of what I'm doing is still believably in the 1300-1310's. :)

If I were to aim my kit towards c.1320, and say anything in the 1310's and 1320's is fair game, then it looks like it shapes up like this: Primarily mail hauberk and coif, with a great helm is spot on. No sabatons or spaulders permitted (he doesn't include ailettes, but I assume they're there in this timeframe). Simple gutter-greaves become possible, but not vambraces (of any kind?), and padded cuisses are possible. There's one instance of a guy with segmented gaunts here, so mail gaunts aren't a strict requirement (I do want to get more than the simple leather ones I use now). Floating knees are common, but I could only possibly get away with a rondel for the elbow.

Interesting. :)

Yeah, I've seen that page. It's not really a good chronology, just more of an "interesting photos and dates" page. The first one at the top is closest to what I use, flat topped with a cross-occular, and it clearly shows 1275-1300 inclusive, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they weren't used beyond that. Most of the page is devoted to round-topped great helms.

i think it's due to that there aren't that many great helms that have been found.

Wow! That is a fantastic find! It really lays it out for you too!  :)

(I'm relieved that all of my harness falls within the timeframe I selected of 1330's - 1350's)  ;)
