Sherwood Forest- TX
« on: 2013-01-22, 23:02:31 »
My Brothers

I will soon be traveling to Sherwood Forest, a newer faire outside of Austin TX. I was there last year for two weekends, a very nice faire with quite a bit as far as buildings and grounds. In general it was a 3rd year faire that looks like its been in operations at least 10 years. Nice people, many common acts from our Northern faires, and yes a few knights as well. I will get some pictures and hand out invitations to any that are worthy so perhaps find us a few more brothers.

Next will perhaps be Scarboro (Dallas TX) or the Southern California Faire in April. It seems strange to me that the faire season is starting back up already but the campaign goes on.

It occured to me that I have been perhaps a bit lacking in talking about my travels last year so here we are, for 2012 I traveled to:

Sherwood Forest (McDade TX)
Scarborough Rennaissance Fest. (Outside Dallas)
California Pleasure Faire (near San Dimas CA)
North Carolina Renn Faire (Knightdale, NC)
Corona Faire (Corona, CA)
Virginia Renn Faire (Spotsylvania, VA)
New Jersey Renn Faire (Liberty Lake, NJ)
Celtic Fling (Pa Renn Faire, this doesn't count really)
Sterling
New York Renn Fair (Tuxedo)
PA Renn Faire
MD Renn Fest
Texas Rennissance Festival

Wow, thats more than I thought really, anyway I am looking at much the same this year, but broken up by a few other things...ok maybe not so many...

Anyway I will tell you there are relatively few of us, and yes we are all a bit crazy, I cant even count the days I was in plate in 85+ weather, I even made a TX surveyor stop while drining his beverage and ask me where I was from as he couldn't have gone the full day in armor. Anyway I continue to meet more brothers, and a few sisters as well (there was one that was quite stunning in California). So hopefully my year recruiting will add to our roster a bit more

You do make the rounds, Sir Robert.  I should like to hear about your exploits- what your take is on each faire or festival you've visited, and its denizens.

Maille's heavy and hot enough...I do not relish the idea of wearing full plate; although Brother James does look smashing in it.

My new harness is much lighter than my 16g stainless which is quite cumbersome. A transitional 13th century kit will be much more comfortable for a change. I do not relish the idea of many hours in full harness killing myself like previous years.

If I wasn't stretchered out of an accident after a semi slammed my car into a concrete wall, if I hadn't torn my left leg open down to the knee cap, and if I wasn't genetically predispositioned to joint issues (dad had knee surgery 4 or 5 times prior to his total replacement, at only 64 years old) ... it wouldn't be so bad. Or if I at least had some carbon steel and it was only 40ish pounds instead of 75! 8)

I thought your suit was mild or stainless...are you leaning more towards spring?  I think I'm going to start saving up for some of that...lighter and stronger?  Can't beat that.

Only "Spring" I'm leaning towards is warmer weather & vacation time. :)

Yep, just 16 gauge mild. I'm hoping to get into spring steel eventually. I mentioned it to Allan, and when the rest of the stuff is done, I'll probably bend his ear on it. I love the style, fitment and mobility of the harness, so I'd like him to make the next one, too.

I've been talking to the guy from Smiling Orc Armory; he works mostly in spring (he'll do other steel types if that's what you really want, but will exhort the bonuses of wearing spring steel lol) and I've seen some of his work, not firsthand though- but from what I saw, he might be the go-to guy if Allan doesn't want to do it.  Mind you...his prices are considerably higher, but I'm thinking that the medium has alot to do with it.
