WMAW 2013
« on: 2012-10-19, 18:24:13 »

Hey all, I just thought I'd start a thread super-early for the next WMAW. If you go to only one WMA/HEMA event, this should be the one. Nowhere else will you get instructors from all over the world, and see booths for Albion, A&A, DSA, and Revival Clothing all in one tent.

The problem is that registration fills up fast these days.... as in, only a few days. Registration usually opens sometime in the late spring.

The event is held at the DeKoven Center in Racine, WI (about an hour north of Chicago). It is held every other year, on the odd-numbered years.

http://wmaw.us/  (currently still redirecting to 2011's page)

Of course it helps to have some WMA/HEMA background, but most of the classes assume you have little or no knowledge. This is because many of the people who go will use it as an opportunity to learn something new. For instance, a rapier-fighter might use it as an opportunity to try longsword. Or a German longsword fighter might want to try the Italian version. Also many of the classes focus on a specific aspect, like actions from the Zwerchau, or the importance of distance, or some-such.

Other classes may be things that very few people have tried, like knife throwing, or bartitsu with canes.

I remember you mentioning this, you actually went, did you not Sir Edward?  I'll be keeping an eye out on this thread.  I said I wanted to go and I do...maybe I'll actually get to this time around.

I'm tempted to go just for the shopping aspect. :) But finding out recently I can't read numbers was a big help - I may try to get out to this one.

Man I really hope I can swing this financially next year. I MUST go to Florida this May which might prohibit my participation in this event.  :-\

I am considering attending this one, but with budgetary uncertainty and college in the way, I may not attend.  Honestly, I would work to be able to attend this event.

I backed out of going in 2011. I think I might give it a try this year.

Wish I could but that's 2,000 mile drive from here, and I can't as yet afford the plane ticket.

And over that distance, the gas would probably cost as much as flying. I have that debate with myself every year too, though the distance for me is about half that.

I agree, the distance is way too big for me and my pops (we live in New Jersey).  The expenses for either gas or plane tickets would overwhemingly be bigger than my savings.

On top of that, I have college during september of 2013, if I could attend summer classes in order to skip a semester I would go for it.  In spite of working full time, I woudl manage if I get the green light from my folks.

I pray I get to go to this event.  It would be worth saving every penny.

Question for Sir Edward:  What are the booth prices for either Arms & Armor or Albion in regards to purchasing a longsword trainer?

I think the booth prices for the trainers were not discounted. Albion often has done a 10% show price for their sharps though.

Yeah I think the REAL savings you would get from purchasing a trainer from either vendor would be a savings of TIME and shipping costs since you'd be purchasing a blade they made specifically to sell at the event.  ;)

For me the travel time would be worth the inconvenience. Aside from air travel being a hassle, it is a chance to see places I haven't been able to visit yet. Also, several family graveyards are roughly along the way.

And also a chance to "hands on" with one - what you like in appearance may not always feel right in the hand to you either. And that can be a very expensive experience!

Oh yes, that's definitely true. Albion usually brings 20 or 30 of their offerings, so it's a great time to compare them. A&A usually brings a lot less, a little more focused on trainers, but it's still a good opportunity to pick up a few of their pieces as well.
