My new arming clothing
« on: 2012-10-08, 21:50:18 »

My new arming clothing came in the mail today, Overall I am satisfied with it. Only thing is the coifs a bit large but I plan to wear it under my maille anyway so it doesnt really matter as much. Just hope it's durable enough to hold up to riveted maille.

Looking good! I wouldn't worry too much about it holding up under mail. As long as you don't have too many sharp bits in the mail, it should be fine.

Linen outer and cotton batting with a linen liner. The mittens are really convenient for me, I dont have to fiddle around with gloves constantly which always irritated me about ren faires.

Looks like it fits really well and the length is spot on for what you wanted. Random question, but did you trim your beard? Also don't worry about the coif; it'll be under the mail, it'll look fine. Check with Badass Garb, they might be willing to shorten the coif for you after Days of Knights too. Doesn't hurt to ask, and lots of custom places will tweak stuff for you.

Looks excellent! The black will hide the filth from the maille quite nicely! :)

I tried it on with the maille. I gotta be less rough with putting it on though cause a few threads came loose on the mittens, everywhere else it was fine though apart from one thread that came out. Just hope this lasts because I really dont want it to wear out, it's my current fave piece of clothing I own. Maybe I shouldnt use maille with it? But it's too thin to be just a stand alone jack. It's only the sleeves that wear out though
No I didnt shave, I just been keeping in a goatee for quite a while. I do need to trim it though my beard trimmer broke.

I'm more worried about it wearing out the fabric but on the chest it's fine it's just the sleeves. Other than that i really like this new gambeson, it's very comfortable and isn't too tight and hot like my old one. It also reaches down PERFECTLY so I'm very satisfied. It's gored as well and isn't just a simple tube and holds the maille much better than my old one. I will however cheat a bit and use a somewhat modernish belt to hold it up, thats going to be under my surcoat so no one will see it, it makes wearing the maille MUCH more comfortable.

Agreed, invisible cheats are THE way to go until you can get more authentic stuff, or not bother since it is hidden anyway.  I also would not worry about the issues with the arming clothes taking a beating from the maille- that's what it is supposed to do, so your soft kit (under the arming clothes) and skin do not.
