Thorsteinn:
Where is this and why are they concerned with swords?
Sir William:
At the MD Ren Faire, swords of any kind are no longer allowed, apparently. It used to be namely sharps, blunts or anything that resembled or could be used as a weapon. Sirs Edward and Brian had found a 'workaround' - scabbards filled with oddments of steel and/or lead and epoxy and topped with a guard, handle and pommel so that it looked like you were bearing a sword when in reality you were not. At least not one that could be drawn, and that was usually good enough for the ones running the Faire.
Which is not so much weird as odd- the VA one, which is less than 100 miles south allows weapons, so long as they are peace-tied you can carry them (pistol and other gun replicas do not apply here).
To answer your question as to why they do not allow them, Sir Edward or Sir Wolf can best explain it as they're the ones who have been going the longest and call tell you about some of the shenanigans that went on 'after hours' - drunken duels done with sharps and the like which caused the Faire promoters to enact the no-weapon clause, costume or real.
Sir Wolf:
so many reasons it's almost become folk-lore. (see what i did there? HAH) a lot has to do with MD's carry laws of blades longer than 3.5? inches. that and MDRF has a lot of back log of drunks n weapons... and the owners are lawyers and do not want the hassle. MD is such a stupid state and i for one am glad i do not live in it anymore. but will respect it's laws when there... (thinking of getting my ccp Sir Edward hehehe)
Sir William:
Do you even need a CCW if you live in WVa? I thought they all open-carried out there anyway, like they do in VA. I remember the first time I saw some kid climb out of a hopped up 'stang with a Glock on his hip- this kid couldn't have been 20 yet but he looked like he'd carried for a while, wasn't shaky or confused looking, or sneaky looking either. One of the two things I like about the state of VA. The Blue Ridge Mountains is the other thing I like about that state. That's IT. lol
Sir Wolf:
not to carry, but i am thinking of getting one anyways.. of course you can't carry in MD from VA or WV ehhehe
