New helm Part 2

Sir William here was kind enough to offer me this helm for 90 bucks, it arrived today and it's large enough to fit under padding unlike my kettle which is rather tight fitting. This will work well for a crusader kit mainly Knights Templar. Though I did find a similar one here http://www.ruestschmiede.de/rsxtco/product_info.php/info/p1146_Frueher-Topfhelm--ca--1210.html





Quite happy with it, now to get a nice linen coif to wear under it so I can wear the maille coif without it digging into me.

Looking good!  Have you tried it with the padding and maille coif yet?  When you do, be sure to take some photos.

I'll be trying that as soon as I can find a place that sells a nicely padded arming cap that isnt made out of foam. My GDFB one works but it doesnt have any padding on the forehead which is a problem.

Finally found a use for that old GDFB padded coif I had, made it into a liner and put it in the helm so the flat top of the helm doesn't irritate the top of my head. I can now wear it securely and comfortably.

the problem i have in making these helmets is the brim of the top, i can not get the edges right where they bend over.. one day

Yeah I had trouble wearing it without a liner, it kept moving down and covering my eyes and hitting me in the nose. Thankfully I solved the problem and have my first full knightly helm. Hope the padded coif lining fits over a maille coif. If the ends of the maille dig into my head again I'm just gonna sell the coif I currently have and get the wedge riveted coif because wedge riveted maille on the inside isnt as pokey.

When I wore it with the coif I had to remove the liner because it made it too tight across my head. But it fits SOOO much better with the coif on, just need to add a TINY bit of a liner to it to make it slightly tighter and I'll be good to go.

Are you wearing the dome heads side on the inside or outside?

Thanks, I think it will look good with my templar surcoat which I need tailored. Before I know it I'll have a nice crusader kit. The helm is quite imposing looking to a lot of people which I sorta like. The vision isnt bad either, cept I cant really see whats below me due to the the faceplate. The muzzle on the helm allows for more room for breathing too which I like as well.

The thing is the inside of my maille the dome head rivets are quite sharp and not peened as nicely as my icefalcon maille is. Guess thats what I get for going after cheaper quality maille. Could always reverse it and wear it the other way out where the rivets are rounder and less pointy, but there is a patch of rust on the inside. Just need a source of where I can get some linen padding cause it's still sorta loose on my head with the maille. Maybe I just need one of those bands knights wore around their coifs though, if I knew where to get one I would get one.

Sir Ulrich, I am happy you found your look. Not to be pessimistic but...the flat-top pot helmet looks very bulky, pertruding, & not proportionate to your head. Why did you not try a transitional flat-top crusader helmet instead?? It is smaller in size, almost same look for your aimed time-period (Crusader-era: 1100-1300), & might fit more comfortable.
