Maille Standard

Here's my maille Standard, which I made out of the excess maille from my sleeves that I took off and some scrap leather.

I think it turned out really well, especially being only a one-day project. Enjoy!

Here's some more pictures, detailing the maille and lining.

It looks great!

One of these days I'll get around to building out mine. I have the mail standard from Ice Falcon, but never got around to backing/strapping it.

That looks really good Nathan...altho I think it appropriate for the 14th or 15th Century?  Sir Wolf will correct me if I'm wrong (or James Barker as I've seen his as well, but both were in the retinue of Lord Grey, 15th C re-enactors).  Putting together a later period kit?

Well if i'm correct it's mostly 15th century, and I have a mid-15th century kit already (I wore it to VARF sans sallet last year).

Well if my memory serves me coorectly, we do have evidence of reenforced collars in the 13th and 14th centuries as well, though they were most often of metal or whalebone construction. Mine's more a historical plausability than anything truly typical in those centuries.

My main promting is actually something to wear to give a more complete look to my harness when wearing it without a helm. It never fails that some punk kid has to point out that "He could easily defeat/kill me by targeting my neck, which means that knights obviously sucks....ect ect ect." And it gets annoying to explain what an aventaille or bevor is over and over again, so I built this, to shut them up. So that's my explaination for wearing it in the 14th century.  :P

You could also respond by explaining to them that seeing an available target does not mean being able to easily hit that visible target and it really isn't a threat if you split their skull first! I would have won every single duel I've ever been in IF my attacks had been a little faster and on target!  ;)

Alas it is now a rarity to find as it is from the Mercenary’s Tailor armory which is no more; however providence may smile upon thee yet for Allan Senefelder who was the former proprietor and is one of the members of this very Forum as well as an honorary member of the Order of the Marshal maybe convinced to make one for you.  ;)

It may be your lucky day:

He has a gorget on there, and is willing to split up the items. If the measurements are close for you, I'd jump at the opportunity to get it.

Sir Nathan, great job on the standard. If you go down the Italian road, in later years, they still used odd bits of mail in places that fell out of favor in other parts of europe - such as on the bottom of their armets (which looks almost standard-like), over the upper cannons of their arm harness, mail sabatons, and sometimes even below the demi-greaves.

Thanks Sir James. Yeah, the Italians were funky. I've seen some images that show almost 3/4 sleeves of maille over a full arm harness.

The Standard appears to be interchangable for a bevor or gorget for most of the 15th century. Apparenty also quite popular in Germany. It's also ridiclously easy to make. I'll post something in the Workshop if you all wish.

As Sir Brian stated, Allan used to make them before he shut down his shop; he still dabbles though so if that one on MyA doesn't suit you, another one coming down the pike might.  I have the same one, paired with a set of pauldrons- sturdy yet comfortable.

I agree, job well done Sir Nathan.  I like your DIY style.   :)

I still have a mail standard that I purchased from Sir Edward sitting unfinished in my shop somewhere.  :(
