Back on TV for armored combat
« on: 2012-05-01, 15:34:26 »
A little while ago the local TV show Time Travel Virginia invited David Rowe and myself to do an episode to demonstrate Historical Swordsmanship (that episode was here )

Recently we were invited back on to demonstrate combat in armor. David Rowe unfortunately couldn't make it, so Tim Hall (another of VAF's Historical Swordsmansip instructors) gracioiusly stepped in to be my partner. The show will air later this month, but they put the lower quality version up on YouTube this morning. It's split into two links.

Part 1:
Part 2:

You'll note some pieces from Arms and Armor and Albion in there, too, as I wanted to make sure I showed some examples of high quality replica weapons.

Very cool.  Thank you for sharing the links!

I'm getting to watch it in little tiny fragments, since youtube is being a pain and only loading a couple of minutes at a time.

But it's OK, I know what to expect. My poleaxe is the star of the show! Right? :)

Sir Edward: Your Pole Ax was the lead in cast of armored combat weapons, given a full review and praise for it by none other than Das Bill!  You're lucky to your Pole Ax as your protege  ;)

Thanks guys, and especially thank you Ed for the use of not only your sweet, sweet A&A poleaxe (god, that thing is sweet!), but also for loaning Tim the shirt of mail. I think it definitely added a new level to be able to have him wear that instead of only his gambeson.

What's funny to me about this comment is that the only time you met me in person was at Ed & Kat's wedding. That means 100% of the time you've been around me, I've been in suit and tie. :)

Something that bothers me is that the training, no matter who is doing it, seems to be either unarmoured vs same or armoured vs same as well as same vs same for weapons (thought I am trying to counter that in the local SCA group & the Kingdom as a whole eventually).

We know Visby happened and so did the Peasants Revolt where armoured men destroyed their lessers brutally and we have Visby & Agincourt where less armoured men had a field day if their idjit betters.

What are your thoughts on training against such?

"Professionals are predicatable, unfortunately the world is full of Amateurs."

How does VAF train to defeat the guy what does a thing cause he knows not to not do it and/or he will be perfectly happy with a Phyrric Victory?

I ask as I know those two things were lacking in all my training previous to me doing something about it.
