Great helms
« on: 2012-04-11, 21:26:45 »
Anyone know where to get a classical templar great helm? I been intending in replacing my aging kettle helm with one but I am picky about the design of it. I want one thats based off of a historical design and would be period in the 1200s, also want to be able to see out of it well enough, in other words I want it to be fit to my face so the eye slits would line up with my eyes.

Yes in fact I do

That exact one, I want a replica of it cept maybe with a bit wider eyeholes.
If this isnt period for the crusades maybe i'll go for the earlier design but this one looks coolest IMO because it's somewhat iconic as a "templar" or "teutonic knight" helm.

Have you contacted any armourers about that helm like Donnogal, Windrose, Icefalcon, Clang, Armstreet, Shamrock, ETC?

I don't know if any of them sell one just like this. As I said I am very picky about the looks of my armor. I also want it to be functional as well as looking hand made and like an actual replica. I want it in normal steel as well, I don't care if it's stainless as I plan to gunblue or paint it anyway so it shouldn't really matter with rust. Guess I'll have to look at those sites to see what they sell, my budget is pretty low too because I am in the process of purchasing a shield and gambeson to replace my crap I bought back in 2010.

Post what you want to the Classifieds section of the Armour Archive with price range. What you want is completely doable and any of the armourers can do it.

Here is a list of good armourers to get you started:

Anshelm Arms did the Full Metal Jousting armour.

Windrose Armoury

http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-22-crusader-helmet.aspx i have this helmet. its not bad. it is a tad long from the eyes to the bottom. I'm short so it almost sits on my neck. but it's a nice manufactured piece for the price tag.

I had this helm for a while:

But it came unpadded and I needed funds so I sold it.  I'm in the process of getting another (read that to mean its on the long list of items to acquire lol) so keep us posted as to what you find.

I think I'm just going to go for the Pembridge and make my way into the late 13th early 14th C.

Edited to add:  I just realized it is probably the exact same helm Sir Wolf has in his picture.  lol

Yeah, that product is very similar to what I want, thing is I am around 5 9 not sure if it would fit me properly. Thats the problem with armor, I cant try it on before I buy it. Also the liner would be a pain, unless

This is the very design I want but it says no longer made which is a real kick to the balls: http://armourandcastings.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=243
All the best armor is made in europe for some reason, americans seem less picky about historical accuracy. GDFB may just be my choice, shame all the good armorers here are out of business.

It isn't that Americans are less picky- just that all of the sources for this stuff originate in Europe.  You do realize there never was an 'American Knight' right?  By the time our country was formed, gunpowder weapons were the norm with the cutlass or saber being relegated to sidearm status.  As for sizing of a helm, with judicious use of padding just about any helm can fit.  For padding you can use a padded cap, and/or with a coif - or you could put the padding into the helm like a lot of the SCA folks do.  Here's a Maj helmet I found on ebaY:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TEMPLAR-HELM-quality-leather-liner-chinstrap-16-Gauge-/260952580692?pt=AU_Militaria&hash=item3cc1fc6254

And another Crusade era helm, also on ebaY, different vendor:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150784861888?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Personally speaking, I think the first helm might be of better quality, but that's just a guess based on the photos available.

It does look pretty decent. Wow, the shipping is about $100. The total price with shipping isn't out of the question though, with it coming from Australia.

That first helm you linked to Sir William, thats a nice helm. I would probably get it if the shipping wasn't so high. All I really want is a finely crafted great helm, one thats hand made basically. Just may end up taking a GDFB one cause I cant find anything else really. Keep in mind I plan to double it for fighting use.
