Collar for a mail standard

Any advice on how to make the collar for the leather standard? I've seen some modern versions, and I'm curious what my best options are. Sir Wolf, I'm looking at you.

here is what my buddy did. same as mine but i have a one piece deer skin liner under mine no linen. pretty easy to do.

I made a 20 inch lightly padded linen collar and hand quilted it, it was about 18 1/2 inches after seem allowance and quilting. It over laps about 1/2 and inch when closed comfortable tight over my neck. I then evenly laid out the top of the maille standard to the top of the linen collar and whip stitched the maille to the linen with a thick waxed linen thread to hold them together to add the leather to the top. I then cut my leather top and doubled it over and pre punched holes with a leather awl. I then used thick waxed linen thread and did a running stitch to hold the leather down over the linen collar and maille. I then closed the bottom 3 rows to keep them from laying open when wearing it.

To finish it I am ordered some brass "D" buckles from Guakler Medieval Wares. I hand stitch them onto some leather and stitch the leather straps over the maille. The opening over laps about 1/2 an inch in the back preventing a gap.

The standard is very comfortable to wear and looks good with my military kit in Lord Grey’s Retinue.

to get the grease off, i rubbed it down with an old towel really good and put it in the sand. then i coated it in olive oil and put on tin foil on a cookie sheet and put in the oven on lowest temp. watched it for i dunno a few mins or so. when the oil felt/looked dryish i took it out, rubbed it down with a towel and the black stopped coming off. don't i look beautiful? better than Big James anyway hehehe

I didn't realize when they said it was blackened that they actually meant coated with black. I wish I'd ordered the H.E. one. Oh well, live and learn.

I talked to Ice Falcon, and I decided to exchange it for their stainless flat ring version.

He said they aren't in stock, and won't be for a while, but I can wait. I really wasn't very happy with the 6mm blackened ones that I ordered... it looks like a typical MRL round ring, round rivetted piece, only with much tinier rings. It also looks like its coated with teflon or something... I thought when they said "blackened" they meant that the metal was treated to be darkened, either by heat or some chemical method. Based on the pictures of the stainless flat ring mail, it looks much more along the lines of what I want.
