Title: My armor light Kit
Post by: Sir Brian on 2011-08-25, 22:50:35
Here are some pictures of my armor light kit. A slightly improved and final variation of what some of you have already seen me wear after the knighting ceremonies @ VARF's last day. The surcoat I wore earlier that day will now be part of this 'armor-light' kit and the linen surcoat will be worn with my bascinet and aventail while the newest surcoat will be worn with the great helm.  :)

Without the maille, spaulders, vambraces and gorget which all together runs approximately 30 pounds it most certainly is! ;)

Nice! And still looking (mostly) fully-armoured to the untrained eye  ;)

I thought it looked great. Sorry I didn't have more time to chat, you caught me at a bad time for that. It was nice to see you again though, I hope you make it back at some point this season.

My apologies as well about not getting to talk longer with you which I attribute to the downside of going to faire with a crowd as it wasn't until later that I was able to leave the wife happily shopping and seek you out. Your buff coat looked even better IRL than the pictures you posted! I will definitely have to consider expanding into some later periods! :)

The light kit looks great! It's nice to have an alternative to wearing the whole thing. :)

It is, it certainly is...looks good on you, Sir Brian.

Nicely done Sir Brian!  I love the axe; do you have additional eye candy photographs?

I bet! I have plans for a similar, but completely different (ummmm) idea for light armor days. The light kit looks great!

I'm afraid not Lord Rodney, those were the best ones out of the bunch.  ;)

Very nice Sir Brian, It`s always a good idea to have a lighter armour kit. Where did you get the maile sabatons from??

@ Sir Gerard:
I got mine from GDFB and here is a link to the original discussion in which Lord Rodney graciously provided some links to some of the vendors that sell them.  :)

Many thanks Sir Brian, I must have missed that conversation  ::)

My maille leg fronts do have a little that sits on the top of my feet ( I will get around to photographing them sooner or later  :-[ ) but they do not enclose the whole of the top of my foot.

No worries Sir Gerard! It actually reminded me that I need to take some follow up pictures on how I ended up securing the sabatons to the soles of my boots! :)

I'd be quite interested to see. :)

I originally stitched a regular #10 flat washer directly onto the sole at the tip and on each side of the boot in
the middle toe (metatarsal bone) area of my boot as this picture shows.

(sabatons)

This proved the concept was sound but the rubber sole was insufficient to withstand the stress and the washer
would eventually rip out of the sole. I then remembered the metal plates screwed into the soles for
tap shoes and figured I could make the same thing but solder a round lug onto the plate so I can attach the
rings of the sabaton to or interlace them with leather cording, either way works fine.  :)

Nope. Selecting the proper screw length is a crucial step!
...err sorry about the pun!  ;)

Very well done, Sir Brian...I meant to comment on how good your mailed sabatons looked!

THANK YOU! Attaching the maile to the boot has been the biggest obstacle to me starting a project like this.  Nice solution!

Great solution! I don't think that would work too well with full-height chausses though. I need to rely on getting my foot through the ankle before putting the shoe on... and then spend like 5+ minutes per foot lacing the mail back down.

Or have a dedicated pair of boots and have the chausses overlap them?
Title: Re: My armor light Kit

I do, but I need the ankle loose to get my foot in and out, which means undoing all the lacing.

Ah, had not thought of that.

Thanks all and glad to share!  :)

One caveat I should mention about putting screws into the sole and walking on them on pavement/concrete.
You may find it a little bothersome, where it feels like a large pebble is stuck in the treads of your boot or sneakers,
if you find it is an irritant then you could always screw the plate into the SIDE of the sole with thinner screws.  ;)

Sir Brian,
That`s a great solution to the problem.
Unfortunately I can not get away with wearing modern footware, so would be interested in seeing solutions to the problem of wearing maile sabatons over "authentic" footware. I am considering a couple of straps accross the underside of the sole, from the outside to the inside of the foot, one at the ball and one just in front of the heel of the foot.

I forgot to ask what gauge are those rings your sabatons are made of?

@ Red Knight:
I would say they are 16g but at 8mm ID they retained their original shape quite well.
I have no concerns that the links will separate very easily with frequent use.  :)

@ Sir Gerard:
That is probably one of the primary reasons I have avoided period footwear because of the
lack of adequate soles and a decent heel with a sufficient arch to allow the spur straps. Be that as it may,
I would concur with your idea and attach rings or eyelets onto a couple of straps under the flat soft soles.
You could either run them straight across or use a crisscross method. I've staged a rough example in the pictures.  :-\

Sir Ed, I had the same problem with my cheater chausses, as even with lacing my ankle is far too big.

The solution I used was to only lace the top half, and use ties for the bottom half.

And for the lacing to the sole, I would take basically a long tie and lace them to the bottom. No Idea as to a permanent set up though  :-\
My answer to period hecklers who pose questions of this type is "Squires"

That's similar to what I did with my period footwear (until the soles fell off). I ran a lace in a crisscross pattern under the shoe to hold the mail down. I still do it this way, but I'm using less period shoes now (fantasy medieval perhaps? They're ankle-boots from Sandlar).
