TerryT's sparring masks
« on: 2008-03-20, 19:31:38 »
I got a chance to handle these at WMAW back in the fall, and decided to get on the list to get one:

http://www.thatguysproducts.com/index.html

They're really quite nice. Very sturdy and well constructed. I think this is what the WMA community has really needed.

He just contacted me and I made payment, so I'm all set to be next in production!

After a multi-month wait, he just contacted me to tell me he's ready to start mine. I just sent him my payment.

Eric and Scott had come in earlier tonight to do some bouting with theirs. They seemed to really love them, and so does everyone else who has one, so I'm pretty psyched about mine.

SwordChick isn't too far behind on the waiting list either, it seems. David R, on the other hand, is WAY down there. I'll be sure to make fun of him for that. :)

Alex saw the ones that Eric and Scott own, and he was very impressed with them. I was wondering what his reaction would be, and I was half expecting him to make fun of them (not that this would have stopped me from getting one either way).

Hah, perhaps that would be even more reason to get one? Still, glad he liked them. :)

Ha, that's true! I can totally see Ed as an extra in Krull!

Eric e-mailed me when he got his. Says he scared the crap out of his girlfriend: While she was in the bathroom, he put his on and waited outside the door. She opened it and shreiked. I told him I was very proud of him. He said that alone made the price worth it.

So now that we've had a chance to play with these masks a little, I have to say I really like it a lot. Though I have to agree with what Bill was saying the other night about it not really protecting the adam's apple on the throat. The metal armor discs that are riveted into the bib still allow a lot of flex here.

Of course, you can still wear a gorget. I was tempted to include one of Terry T's gorgets in the order with the mask, but I don't know if they're any more protective than the brigandine style gorget I already have. I'd be curious to see if they're made with the same design as the bib on the masks.

Still, overall the mask is well built, sturdy, fits nicely, and is adjustable.
