how do you feel about cupping or holding at the end, making the forearm almost like the atlatl?

It might work, but you'd need two hands and a solid technique. Though your form might be like that of throwing a sword you wouldn't have anything behind your hand to act as a counter balance. Even with an Atlatl you have the lever which is behind the throwing hand till the point of release.
