Holding your own!
« on: 2013-10-17, 16:50:31 »
I have recently picked up a rather nice four foot straight blade and a buddy of mine picked up a two-handed hammer. He has about ten years of experience with his lovely, and I have never faced a hammer user. Any tips?

Depending on the length of the hammer, use a longer-reach weapon and keep your distance.  Watch out if he's using a hook-ended war hammer - they can be deadly in getting around your shield.

A heavy weapon like that may take a lot of energy and stamina to wield. Maybe let him use all of his efforts and exhaust him. Keep a shield and try to redirect his blows away from you. If he swings down you may have enough time to step around him. But what kind of weapons do you have and what is his hammer like?

Don't get hit. When you do get, find out why, and don't do it again. :)

Also depends on his hammer and how unwieldy or swift it is. If he's fast, you have a blade, so you can thrust; if he's slow, get out of his line or deflect his attack and counter.

He is using a maul with a hook on one side. The hammer is about 4 and a half feet. My sword is roughly the same size

He has the advantage with being able to hook your hilt if you are using longsword & pommel you. However, you could use hafting method to fight on equal footing but you lose half your reach by switching from hilt to blade (not to mention at risk of injury by gripping your own blade). Hope for a clearance to strike through his defense.

parry, repost. keep a low fast lunge, and turn your body, makes you harder to hit.

This is not fencing my brother, unless he was using a saber or a weapon of the fighting style.
