Made a Gambeson
« on: 2013-09-16, 01:58:16 »
Finished this project on Thursday, just in time for the trip to the Kansas City Ren Festival.  I used the pattern from this site (very easy to make): http://whitemountainarmoury.com/pdfs/armingCoat.pdf  I used pre-quilted, double-faced material to save me a lot of sewing.  Before anyone asks, it is 100% cotton facings AND fill.  Thanks Sir James for the excellent arming point tutorial (sewing all those holes was a PITA).  Also made a pair of matchng chauses like the ones Sir Brian did a few seasons back.  Wore them to the KCRF today (85 and sunny) with NO heat problems!

Glad that tutorial helped. It's a bit out of date, I've been punching holes in the leather around the perimeter now and sewing it directly to the garment now.

Arming coat looks good!

Heh. I know that pattern! I just made an aketon a few weeks ago and used that selfsame tutorial.

I must say, yours is a lot snazzier than mine, though. ;)

Nice! I haven't had the courage to attempt arming garments yet. I can manage surcoats, but sewing something more "functional" is a little beyond me now. So, I'm impressed!

Nicely done, Sir Patrick...I need to visit Sir James' tutorial as I need to sew my arming points on.

The arms nearly outfoxed me. I ended up making them a bit longer than necessary at the armpit end. Slid them up my arms and then put on the rest of the jacket (a vest at that point). I then crossed my arms and had the wife pin the back seam, uncrossed and pinned up the front. Sewed the arms on and then cut out the excess inside the pits. If you do it this way, don't sew the arms up all the way to the pits to start with, otherwise you can't slip them over your shoulders for the test fit. And be brave, Sir Edward, I run the wife's sewing machine like I run my bandsaw:  stay on the line ;)

Ah, I'm glad it was helpful, but 'tis a bit out of date at this point. I now punch holes around the perimeter and sew it on directly. Also going to dye it to match the fabric, as I noticed the tan leather is very visible through the mail against a black arming coat.

Hoping to do it before DoK, so I'll post an updated tutorial if I get it done.
