Old School Zelda / Final Fantasy tribute
« on: 2013-07-18, 21:04:40 »
For anyone that grew up with the gold NES cartridge for the original Zelda, and the real Final Fantasy games (1, 2 and 3, maybe even 7), you owe it to yourself to check out the game Evoland on steam.

It's a tribute to those games.  It's a cool concept.  Basically it starts out in monochrome and as you progress and find treasure chests you unlock 'game technology.'  For example, you find things like 256 color graphics, and 8 bit sound, and as you progress it gives you more and more modern features like inventories, until you finally wind up in a 3D HD adventure game.  It's short, and an indy game, but it's very inexpensive and a nice nostalgic tribute to the games that we used to love!

That looks interesting! I grew up with the gold cartridge and, I believe, still have it. Same with Final Fantasy 1. I also went through the first and master quest of the original Zelda, first on NES, then on the Gamecube re-release, then again on PC emulator a while back (but did so with an XBox controller ;)).

Thanks for posting this!

OK, that actually looks pretty awesome. I might have to grab that. Not sure when I'll get to play though. I have a TON of games waiting for me in Steam now, after the summer sale.

I bought Dragon Age: Origins, the Fallout series, and the whole Star Wars bundle (with KOTOR, Battlefront, Force Unleashed, etc).

Ah well, what's one more? :)

The stupid thing is, with all of this Steam downloading I did this week, I actually filled my disk. 1 TB doesn't go that far anymore. I had to (*gasp*) uninstall some older games. The shame!

I posted a new thread with some links to medieval-themed games on sale for the steam summer sale. Feel free to go spend more money! :D

Dragon Age: Origins surprised me- I enjoyed it much more than I thought it would.  Right up your alley there, Sir Edward- it is a pretty in-depth story driven RPG (lot of reading though, the voice acting in DA2 was well done altho some complained as is usual) that I played thru at least twice - just loved the world, the characters and story.  You might find the action elements a bit simplistic (pretty standard sword and board tactics, and they don't deviate) but it can get pretty hairy and I wasn't ever bored.

Dragon Age: Origins is a good modern effort at the classics like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights etc... it doesn't disappoint.  Dragon Age 2 however... was a lousy console port.

Witcher 2 is better than both of them combined, also on Steam! :)

Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age 3 are both in development now, and they're using a new engine for them, so hopefully it won't have that "bad console port" sort of feel to it.
