My Current Kit
« on: 2012-12-26, 01:53:51 »
Hanwei-Tinker 9th Century Viking Sword (Blunt)

Pros:
-Great dynamic handling
-Cheap
-Well-tempered

Cons:
-Thin handle
-Pommel digs into wrist with "hammer" grip (though this can be rectified rather easily by changing up one's grip)
-Possibly not to everyone's liking (weight-wise)

Viking Boots from Viking Leathercrafts

12th-Century Novgorod Pendant made by Jadwiga Wawrykiewicz

I've also got an arming cap from Revival Clothing and a coif of Hanwei GDFB dome-riveted maille, but I don't have pics of that at the moment.  ;D

How do the boots hold up to heavy use?

Whats next on the gear wish list?

I have a bunch of other stuff on order, but I will make sure that I have pictures of myself wearing all of the equipment by the time that most of it arrives. :)

Over the past few days, I have worn them while practicing with my HT sword, and they hold up quite well to me motioning around concrete, (and the occasional dirt) for the soles are made of vibram and the heels are reinforced. I have yet to put them to serious wear and tear tests, though.

In terms of gear to come, I have ordered a rubakha (an East-Slavic styled undershirt/tunic) from Jorgencraft that is currently being made in England, a Slavic-styled helm of Czech manufacture, and some Rus Viking trousers. I will be needing some sort of kaftan to go over the rubakha, but that can wait a bit. This (excluding some of the items above, and whatever I might decide to buy in the future) will complete my soft kit.

For the future of my armored kit, I will probably be procuring some splinted arm guards, a gambeson, and riveted maille hauberk (or maybe some lamellar, as that was widely used by both the Slavic tribes and by the Rus Vikings).

I am going for a portrayal of a solider from Kievan Rus', which encompasses a time from around the 9th-13th century. The kit that I'm doing falls somewhere in-between the 10th and 12th centuries.

That sounds like it will be very cool when you finish it. I don't see many people doing eastern Eurpe or Russia that early. There are a few people nearby doing 16/17th Century Poles, Lithuanians and Cossacks. Good luck with the kit.

So, I haven't posted in my thread in a long while, but there's a lot of updates that need to be made! I've changed my portrayal from an early Medieval Russian Druzhinik to a late-13th-century Polish rycerz (knight)!

My soft kit:

Current armor kit:

The hauberk is made from 8mm-diameter mild steel rings that are round riveted. They alternate between dome riveted round rings and solid, flat punched rings. This is more proper for my portrayal than a wedge riveted hauberk, because wedge riveted maille would have been quite rare in the Duchy of Mazovia until at least the second half of the 14th Century.

The gambeson under the hauberk is a custom design from Badassgarb, replicating a 13th-century design with a split down the middle. It has some green trim, for a bit of personal flair. The boots are from Viking Leathercrafts - they're of nailed construction, but they're very sturdy and probably some of the best I can get without shelving out big bucks. The braies and chausses are linen and wool, respectively, and are from Historic Enterprises. The arming cap is from either GDFB or Armory Replicas. The belt around my waist is a late-13th-century/14th century design which I purchased off of Kult of Athena, and I'm not sure of the maker.

I've got some chausses at home which I have to modify a bit so that they actually fit. I also have a new 8mm coif, but I'm also going to modify that, too, so that's not shown (yet :) ). A surcoat with the 1295 symbol of Przemysl II should be arriving pretty soon, too. My face was a bit gunky from putting on the maille, too, but hey. That's a hauberk for ya! Oh, and my current sword, which is my DT5143, a nice and hefty Type XIIIa, is also back at home, but here it is in all its glory:

Finally, in addition to all of this, I'm getting a helmet made by Jeffrey Hildebrant that replicates a form of kettle helm worn in Russia, Eastern Poland, and Lithuania in the 13th century and beyond:

That helm is pretty sweet. Do you know how it's held onto your head? A thing under the chin or something? I don't think buckled chin straps were a thing until the 15th or 16th century.

Chin buckles are actually known from archaeological finds dating at least before the 7th Century AD (take the Vendel helms, for instance). On this design, though, I've opted for deerskin laces due to reduced cost.

That's a nice looking sword. Those sleeves look plenty long, too. Luckily it is much easier to trim off than to add on. Looks good so far, and very unique helmet choice.

Thanks!

Yeah, those sleeves might need a bit more trimming. They're currently at a length where the tips of gloved fingers just poke through. Originally, they were so long that I could flail the sleeves everywhere.

Yep, just a little more tailoring, and it'll be spot-on. Looking good!
