Just bought my first anvil
« on: 2012-01-13, 19:15:58 »
Finally got my own anvil! :D

And I call it "The World's Cutest Anvil" because it's so tiny....

Medieval blacksmiths would have loved the new "pocket sized portable anvil", right?  8)

You just add water to grow it to full size, right? :)

$14.99 at Tandy Leather Factory. :)

It seems like it could be; I think it would need a firm base to hammer upon, though. I'm going to attach it to my workbench for little things like peening rivets. It's a great replacement for my "vice that happens to have a flat part" that I used until now.

That would be awesome, especially if I could just dry it out and have it shrink again so I could move it easily. I would try it, but I'm afraid I'd only get a visit from the rust fairy. :(

Where'd you get yours Sir James? Harbour Frieght only sent me a message saying that their supplier no longer produces them. I was highly dissapointed, as that paper isn't at all useful for riveting!  >:(

Nathan, theres usually a couple of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Railroad-Track-21-Lb-Blacksmith-Anvil-20-INCHES-LONG-/110810005220?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19ccca7ee4 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Railroad-Track-Anvil-hand-made-/280806150282?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416159d08a at any given time. I've had many over the years ( and have one right now ) and they're very handy. You can set them on a small stump ( I had a nice one on a stump block made from 4"x4"'s at working/waist hieght, that could be fliped on its side to use several different sized shallow dishes I made in it as well as attaching a small columbia bench vise to it and accepting several small stakes for doing shows ). These were made and used by farmers, miners, rail workers ect. for small work. Blacksmiths were expensive so being able to do some basic blacksmithing on small anvils like this wasn't uncommon.

I got a 15 lb anvil off of ebay a while back, for maybe $20-$30. It's not quite as portable, but still pretty small. Works great for rivets. I'd be amazed if they couldn't still be found on ebay.

Sir Wolf...such a braggart.  lol ;)

I kid thee, Sir Wolf.  Nice pickup, Sir James...I imagine it'd also function as a last-ditch weapon if all else fails.
