Possible future harness
« on: 2011-06-23, 05:18:50 »
I know I have posted a pic of my old full harness. Most of which I had to sell. My wife knew when I sold it that a replacement would be in the future. I have decided that I am going for the mid-late 15th century. This is what I have come up with. I will be making my own riveted flat ring skirting and voiders for the underarms and behind the knees.

For some reason I can't post the pic of the sabatons. So here's a link to them. They're by Armstreet.

That looks very impressive. Good luck with it, post some pics when you get it all assembled.

Excellent idea Sir Wulf!  I am glad you are getting your main pieces from Mercenary Tailor's.  I do like the Bellows Face Sallet Helmet, which looks perfect for your harness.  Can't wait to see pics of it!

I'm a fan of Allan's work (Mercenary's Tailor) so you've made some good choices.  I like Armstreet as well, or at least their look, but the exorbitant shipping (which has proven slow on occasion) puts me off from them.  I look forward to seeing you put it all together, Sir Wulf.  I think that's awesome that you're going to do the mail yourself...

It looks like the new glossary breaks URLs just like the old one. Lovely.

I fixed it in your messages by putting the word "sabatons" before the picture link.

Thank you Sir Edward.
I made my butted maille hauberk from 16ga wire. I have found a source for the riveted rings now I just need a source for the solid punched rings. Making the maille is time consuming and tedious. Fortubatly I'm ADD and OCD!  ;D

I like the harness. Only question is why a breastplate and the plackart?

Thank you Sir Edward.

Please post a thread if you find solid rings (9mm stainless would be awesome ;)), I'd like to do a similar project with mail.

From what I've heard, a layered look with a breast plate and a plackard was fairly popular and common in the late 15th Century. It didn't last long, probably because of all the weight.

no, those 2 don't go together i dont think. ask Allen about getting a 2 part breastplate with placart.. the upper breastplate will only come down an inch or so below the top of the placart then.

I wondered a bit if the breast plate was actually a full size or shortened for the placart. Thank you for clearing that up. I just got back a helmet that Allan lined and strapped for me, he did a fantastic job. He quoted me 7-10 day and had it done and back to me in less than a week! First rate guy to deal with, I'm definitely going to keep him in mind for future projects!
