The Mysterious Sir Joshua Santana is here!

Huzzah and Greeting to all!

I am Joshua Santana as you all know I am a firm, passionate believer in Chivalry and Knighthood, ever since I was fifteen years old I have the passion of the Knightly Arts.  To put a long story short, I have been rasied on the Arthurian legends and other chivalric tales such as St. George and the Dragon and Redwall by the late Brian Jacques.  It wasn't until a year ago that I found a real life modern day knight via youtube that I fully decided to walk the Path of Chivalry.  March 7th is the exact date and the past year has been challenging yet rewarding.  This month I have planned to study the Knightly Arts during the summer (and hopefully during college) under SIGMA and Selohaar Fechtschule.

My mission and duty as a Knight is to promote Chivalry.  This comes from me seeking to be a Knight for Hire (where I do knightly services to the public, promote Chivalry through there and get dubbed as a Knight!)   I also seek to be in the SCA, Adrian Empire, Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia and other chivalric orders (hopefully the Order of Selohaar).

In terms of getting a harness and what type, well out of honesty I am still raising money to purchase one.  The type of harness I would like to wear is the classic German Gothic harness.  I was planning to wear a 14th Century harness until I found out that it wouldn't work (for the knight for hire service) but I would buy one for other purposes.

One last thing I should mention is that the title "Knight of The Lion Blade" is a title I penned from my coat of arms which you can see on my facebook profile.

With that said and done, I am glad to be able to converse with fellow brethren in arms.

At Your Service and in The Service of those in need,

Sir Joshua Santana, Knight of the Lion Blade

Welcome to the forum!  :)

And may I wish you good fortune in all your future knightly endeavours. Including purchasing a harness, that takes awhile and gothic isn't cheap.  :)

Hail, and welcome to the forum!

I was just curious about this:

I was planning to wear a 14th Century harness until I found out that it wouldn't work (for the knight for hire service) but I would buy one for other purposes.

What aspect of the 14th century harness isn't to your liking? The 14th had a wide range and represented the evolution from all-mail to mostly-plate.

But I must say, overall you've chosen very well to go with a gothic harness. It's hard to go wrong with that, as that is some of the most beautiful armor out there.

Hail and well met!

I second Sir Edward's question about the 14th Cent and what you think doesn't fit. While Gothic is among the most decorative and generally accepted as most elegant, it is also among the most expensive. ;)

"14th Century Mafia Gear

Let me maketh an offre to you that you canst not by any means refuse...

Perhaps you love the Hundred Years' War.  Maybe it's the shiny awesomeness of a houndskull bascinet that has drawn you in.  It could be that you have read the tales of Froissart and the many feats of arms and chivalry that were done by men at arms in that time, and it speaks to you.  Whatever the source of your interest in the 14th century, here is some gear to express that love to others, and to show your allegiance to the one true century in unmistakable terms."

I thank everyone of you!

To answer sir Edward and Sir James' question.

The 14th Century is harness is a good looking harness, the decision to switch from 14th century to Gothic comes from my inspiration and role model Sir Karl Martin Kindt III who is the Knight for Hire I mentioned before.  He recommended the switch based on armor that I can put on myself without any assistance, i did some research and 14th Century harnesses needed some help (i believe with with liners).  But there are other 14th Century harnesses that use straps, I am aware of that and I would purchase them.  I was looking for armor that had straps and Gothic seemed to work the best for me.  Also, since I intend to demonstrate the Knightly Arts, I thought that it would be a good decision on my part to change the harness into the Gothic type (I intend to show some plates from Paulus Kal, Talhoffer and others and demonstrate the techniques) to show that correlation and to avoid (in my mind while I was thinking about this) kids and teachers who would say: "Knight's didn't wear the armor you're wearing?  It's not in the picture" argument.

I am aware that Gothic is expensive, that is my reason for saving the money before burning it on customizations for the harness.

But I thank all of you the same!

On a second note, I appreciate Rauttskegg's post and that is one of the reasons for planning 14th Century harness.

Still, I like it!

Welcome, Sir Joshua...I am somewhat familiar with Karl Kindt's offerings, having perused his site at length some years back, and more recently as well.  I wish you the best in your endeavours, keep us posted as to progress!

Indeed, I've seen Mr Kindt's site over a decade ago. You'll find very little difference between putting on 14th and 16th century armor by yourself:

* the cuirass may require assistance on either one, but both are often single chest/back units without faulds or tassets (esp early-mid 14th),
* the arm harness would be pointed to the arming clothes on both,
* the 14th C gorget / bevor are often similar in strapping,
* the upper legs would be pointed to arming clothes the same,
* the greaves & sabatons are the same,
* gauntlets are of course easy either way :D

The armor that gets really difficult to put on your by yourself is late 16th cent italian, especially if it has the additional reinforcing plates, with the angel wing pauldrons, armet w/gorget + wrapper, massive cuirass w/multiple faulds & tassets, etc - of which german gothic doesn't have. ;)
