Hello...again.
« on: 2010-10-21, 20:36:14 »
Hello my brothers in arms -

I thought I should introduce myself again, since I had to delete my previous account. Long story, but I was terrified I had spread a virus here and many other places. New computer and new accounts, now.

I know some of you already, Sir Brian, Sir Ed. And I finally met Paladin last weekend. I have yet to meet Sir Wolf, but needless to say you are all an inspiration to me.

Some of you know Saul Judah already; he is all over the photos in Flicker, etc. Very recognizable with his Old Testament hair and beard. I think I've convinced him to join the site as well.

Nice to be back. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as I can in upcoming Faires.

Silvanus.

Silvanus, it was indeed a pleasure making your acquaintance; I am sorry that it was so short!  Hope to see you in the future...will you be there this weekend, the last one for this year?

Thanks, Sir Ed.  ;D

And Paladin, yes it was great to meet you at last. It was short, true. In fact I was in excruciating pain while we spoke due to my woefully inadequate suspension system for my chausses. I had to leave early.

I made a new system over this week, and will try to post some pics of it in the appropriate thread. No more belts digging into my pelvic bones!

Did you fashion suspenders for your chausses?  Sir Ed mentioned that the weight was dragging down on your hips...that can't have been pleasant.

Lookin forward to seeing all of you on Sunday...what time will you all be there?

Yes. The belt was literally gnawing its way into my hip/pelvic bones. Now I fashioned some suspenders out of two leather belt straps, one for each shoulder, all riveted, and then riveted two smaller straps across the chest and back to hold them in place - so they don't slide off the shoulders. The chausses are attached to the ends by leather bands. It's funny how I have never had this problem before, but I've lost 15-20 pounds in the past few months, several inches across the stomach. Maybe that's how the belt is no longer viable. (No more padding.)

I haven't come across any period art depicting suspension systems for chausses. One wonders what methods Medieval Man used. It may not be historically accurate, but I'll never use a belt for chausses again. I wore the new system indoors for several hours and did some sword/pell practice out back. They feel and work great.

Will post some pics in the right thread soon.

See you Sunday.

It would be nice if we could get the 'exploded view' of the medieval man so we could see everything he might've worn.  I'd imagine that someone somewhere might've had the idea of using suspenders or maybe it wasn't such an issue since our ancestors rode horseback for the majority of the time they spent in armor so the weight of the chausses may not have been an issue for them.  Congrats on the weight loss, by the way- that's awesome.

Yeah it's hard to say. Fabric chausses were typically tied to the waist-band on the braies (underwear), but I have no idea about armor chausses, since they're so heavy. I use a belt with mine, and to keep it from causing me pain by shifting on me, I have to make it crazy tight. I wear a size 36 pants, and probably tighten that belt down to like 30. It has to be smaller than the top of your pelvis or it'll work its way down.

Great idea on the leather suspenders! Have you worn them all day yet? I'd love to hear about the pros and cons after an entire faire day with them.

Congrats on the weight loss! I had similar issues with my plate armor. It fits better when I'm at the higher end of my weight fluctuations. :)
