Should have been smarter
« on: 2016-12-27, 23:13:32 »
Just wanted to share a simple message of making sure you use your gear when sparring or drilling. I got this nice little shiner over the weekend because I didn't want to drill with my fencing mask on. We were working on some simple Zornhau drills and after becoming lazy and used to the drills I got sloppy and walked right into my opponents blade as they were swinging towards me. Not a terrible injury BUT it could have been worse and it was completely preventable. So here's a pic of my eye after a couple days after the swelling went down and subsequent embarrassment over my own stupidity in the hope that maybe someone else will think twice about fencing (even drilling) without proper safety gear.

Happy Holidays!  :o

Yikes!  That was close.  I'm very happy that you only have a shiner.   :o

A genuine teaching moment, that.  Glad it was no worse.

Jason, what's that creeping into your beard?  It looks like a "beard argent"!   ;)

Yeah, I'm turning 40 this Friday and the grays are a reminder of increasing age. As they say though: your only as young as you feel and as long as I keep active I feel pretty good. Being sedentary makes me feel like I'm 90 though.

I got hit with the tip of a sword and if it was just a half inch or so higher it would have gotten the eyeball. A black eye I can deal with as I've been hurt worse but a damaged eye is something entirely different.

Considering the circumstances, this was a good outcome!   :)

Get well, wear your gear, and keep hitting friends with sticks, steel and other pointy things!

Coming into the gray club is not a big deal as for as I'm concerned as I am coming into good company.

Yikes! One of my worst fears is an eye injury. I work in an industrial job and I'm almost fanatical with my employees about wearing their eye protection. Glad it wasn't serious!

We already have character. Now we just have color that makes us indistinguishable from our steel.
