When I saw the link on AA I read it as '14th Century PATTENS for sale' and got really excited...  then I was disappointed when I caught my error

pattens are the wooden overshoe that you wear over over your turnshoes.

Or under the turnshoe, as the case may be. There are versions that were essentially wooden blocks strapped to the bottom of the shoe.

Yes, they are worn literally 'under' the shoe.  But the object is called an overshoe.

I've tried a couple of their patterns.  Poorly engineered for the high price.  I wish their was someone making quality patterns for this era like there are for later eras.

i made the type pictured (sandal) and the flip flop. both worked out ok.  the only thing i found is that the sandal version has a hinge under the middle of the foot with leather. the nails pull out or the leather rots after a while.

both take some getting used to wearing.
