Sir Ulrich's shield

Well I got an update as requested about my shield. It's almost done they just gotta add the rim to it and we'll be finished.

It's looking good, only issue is I didnt realize but with a longer shield it has that bottom space thats open, i'm not sure if thats period but whatever, once it has the rim it shouldnt look as empty at the bottom.

Looks good Ulrich, I think you'll be ok with the 'empty bottom space' as it is still carrying the colors for the base.  They did a good job on the heraldry.  What material are they putting on the rim for you?

I plan on getting it rimmed in steel so it is stronger. I would of done rawhide but i'm not sure if they do that and I think for this steel would work better, though I might antique it with some vinegar.

Steel rims aren't very historical, though- what period are you aiming for?  Leather/rawhide is the way to go as I am told.  ;)

Yeah I am doing 1270-1330 era. I already payed for the steel rim though so theres no turning back really, But this is for my heraldic knight kit and not my teutonic knight kit.

Agreed. Has good detail Ulrich. If you choose to cover the steel rim, I have a suggestion that would 'hide it' to make it period but maintain its strength & durability. I did it to one my earlier heaters so I could use it in SCA combat & for period use. Best shield I ever bought was by Pitbull Armory but it's heavy duty steel primed black with brass trim..... hmmmm sounds like someone's new kit in progress.  ::)

I did read roman shields had rims of iron or brass. Makes me wonder if medieval ones did at one point. Prolly not a steel rim for the 13th century though but iron does seem possible. Rawhide was probably most likely but i'm still unsure if they had steel or iron.
