Interesting. I'm wondering how much his own gauntlet contributed to it. While we can't see the injury itself, it's clear he was having a bunch of pain there and wasn't quite sure what to do.

Head & hands are always primary in thee sword fight. Make sure that is your strongest armor points w/ padding.
