Title: Heraldry and Rolls of Arms
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-28, 18:34:46
Historically, particularly in the earlier parts of the period, heraldry was often more geometric with maybe only one or two charges.

Take a look at the Dering Roll of Arms (circa 1270-1280) below:

I don't know how accurate this is, but I came across someone's attempt at a roll of arms of knights from the battle of Agincourt:

http://fineartamerica.com/featured/knights-at-agincourt-1415-james-bryan.html (http://fineartamerica.com/featured/knights-at-agincourt-1415-james-bryan.html)

Interesting that it's for sale as a print, but it has grey artifacts from cut-and-pasting next to some of the shields. Odd that the person didn't clean that up.

Another interesting one to look at:

I look the look of that second one.  A little more intersting than just shields IMO.

I love how the one in the lower left corner has a sword hilt as his crest. It looks like he's been impaled through the head. :)

Could we do a Modern Chivalry Roll of Arms?

We have the Order of the Marshal one here:

http://orderofthemarshal.org/members/rollofarms/index

Sir Edward or I can add you to the list if you would like, just let us know the heraldry or send us a picture if you have one.

It's not so much a roll of arms, but we have the "Knight Pages" button up at the top, where forum members can upload some pictures and write up something about themselves, or their persona, etc.

Though nowadays I draw it with a Skeggox (http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/7213/c396a.jpg), and the 'point pointed' more like Mount Rose (http://www.gottagoitsnows.com/pictures/1030_1180s.jpg). (sorry, best pic I could find)

As long as you don't create a pirate persona, too - because we'd have to call you Sailor Moon, and no self-respecting man should wear a Sailor Moon costume. :D

And on another note. I promised myself a tattoo for my 30th birthday. Economics interviened but as soon as I have the cash I'm getting a tatto of my arms on either my left or right shoulder.

"They've done OK so far"

"???"

I vaguely recall something about "the right to heraldic arms" in some sort of declaration or something a couple centuries ago.

and here we have Sir William "Billy" Gigli "The Moon Knight" of Wetwang, East Yorkshire, Son of Lord Gaylord Gigli of Penistone, South Yorkshire charging headfirst into every play upon words, effeminate popular culture reference, and unfortunate modern pronunciation he can unintentionally discover.

haha  ;D

There is one site I came across during a break at work that has a lot of German coats of arms of the Counts. It's in a "wappen buch" and I think I found it by googgling wappen book.

I have found a lot of other sites with coats of arms, but a lot of times I forget to bookmark them.

Sir John.

There is something missing in this thread...it would appear that I've responded twice...but the second one seems nonsense.

I thik we may have been discussing Knightly monikers or sobriquets earlier in the thread, and you may have stumbled upon those two rather unfortunate ones....

I for one couldn't resist posting my own bit of nonsense, juxtapositioning that with several real English town names of equal hilarious misfortune.  ;D

BTW the SCA no longer needs worry about crossing heraldry with legitimate arms as we got the OK from the UK & French organizations that do this stuff.

Ok to do what?
Title: Re: Heraldry and Rolls of Arms

Ok to do what?

For a long time the rules of SCA Heraldry were you could not register, or be within 3 points of difference of, any 'Real' arms unless you had the legal right to bear them in mundane life for fear of getting in trouble for copyright, trademark, or other infringement.

Well, I don't know how it came about but so long as you are not claiming to be that person or truely descended from them (or some such. I'm not a herald) then you can use any arms you like so long as they are not a direct copy and the 3 points rule is gone for them as well (you still need it for other SCA heraldry).

Thank you for sharing Rautt!  This was helpful and is since I will be registering my Heraldric Arms via the SCA.

Nice!

Be prepared to wait, and change them, and wait, and change them.
Mine took a long while to pass and that was 25 years ago.

Even a simple uncontested name change takes 8 months.

Edit: This last line is about me going from 'Ivan Ivanovitch Serebrenikov" to "Torsteinn Raudskeggr". There have been about 6 Torsteinn's in the SCA and none close to my name, but the bureaucratic wheels still turn slow.

Excellent!  Best part is that I am a patient man that can wait a long time (even years) so this to me is a piece of cake.   ;)

Yeah, it does take time. I think mine didn't pass until the following spring, after registering them at Pennsic in August. Seven or eight months sounds about right. I think I did mine in 2008, so it's pretty recent.

I was super lucky. Mine went through on the first shot, which is hard to do with swords and/or dragons, since they're so commonly chosen.

He speaks the painfull truth.  My name and arms are still not registered after four submissions.  :o

Lord Rodney: do try to be patient, why not email them to see if it is going through the process?  That should should help.
