Well Met!
« on: 2011-01-04, 22:39:04 »
Please let me introduce myself to the fine Chivalry 'round this table.

I've been interested in all things Knightly, sharp and pointy as long as I can recall.  My interests led me to the SCA where I've been fighting "heavy" for over 13 years.  Over that time my persona and kit has changed more times than I care to count.  Finally settling on a decade (1350-1360) and a general location (south of England), I was able to take my kit in a specific direction.

My first and true love of combat is the rattan based combat of the SCA concentrating on sword-with-shield and polearm.  Recently I've become very interested in combat with steel weapons after witnessing SCA "cut-and-thrust" combat with "Hanwei practical hand and a half swords".

As if I needed more of a push, I just learned that Craig Johnson of Arms & Armor holds weekly longsword training classes at The Oakeshott Institute just minutes from my workplace.  I will be attending his classes to fulfill one of my New Year resolutions.

As an active member of both myArmoury and Armour Archive, I recognize many of the members here on Modern Chivalry and know that I am in very esteemed company indeed.  I will do my very best to positively contribute to this forum. :)

Welcome to the forum! You're extremely lucky to have convenient access to A&A and The Oakeshott Institute.

There are several WMA/HEMA practitioners on here, though probably not many active SCA heavy fighters so far. As an aside, A&A does make some fine steel trainers for historical swordsmanship.

Welcome. I was about to ask if you're on another forum, as the avatar looks familar.

You are indeed in a very lucky place to have easy access to A&A and The Oakeshott Institute. I'm over an hour away from the closest WMA practices.

I'm very adept at drawing ale, but be warned, the tales grow taller with each empty tankard. ;)

I had the opportunity to meet Craig in the shop for a brief spell just before Christmas.  They have a simple wooden rack that holds completed swords ready for shipment.  I am having trouble putting into words my experience of seeing so many blades of so many eras just standing in their little slots.  The only thing that tore me away from the rack was one of the elves saying "over here are the shelves of daggers, maces and axes; want to try some on for size?"  At that point I started babbling incoherently.

I really need to take some new photographs as my kit has changed significantly in the last 12 months. :-[

Were it not for that, there would never have been Tales of Charlemagne or Knights of the Table Round...at least, not worth reading or listening to.  ;)

Thank you Red Knight. :-[

I am not a prolific poster.  Instead I try to post only when I can contribute in some fashion.  (Not to say an occasional silly post doesn't slip out from time to time. ;))

Welcome Sir Rodney. Good to see another virtuous knight on the forums.
I admire your 14thc kit. Love the work you did with that houndskull.
