Sorry I missed you guys today. I arrived late. I have the new sword belt and surcoat  ;D

There was one problem.... One of the security gentlemen at the outer gate gave me some grief for my sword hilt and scabbard.

I showed him that the blade was cut 1.5 inches from the hilt.

He told me that "they prefer" no hilt at all, just the scabbard. I mentioned that I (and others) had been doing so for weeks, even during last year's Faire. Still he said they "prefer" no hilt....

He still let me in.

I am beginning to dislike the security people.

Hope to see you all before the Faire ends.

Silvan

its not their fault. the faire is owned by lawyers that have a strict no weapons policy thanks to many years of stupid people.

how is your sword hilt attached to your scabbard?

Silvanus! We missed you, Sir Ed and I tried to find you but our progress was greatly hampered with
numerous photo ops.

Yes they inquired about my sword as well and the real irony was we met an older guy dressed as a
Scotsman who had THREE weapons! He had an axe, a claymore and a dirk all without even being peace tied!  :o

He was even bragging about not even being checked at the gate!  >:(

So I don't know how much longer they'll let those of us in with the scabbards and sword hilts.  :-\

Hi Sir Wolf,

I have the hilt tied to the scabbard with leather lacing. I took it out and showed him the one inch of blade....

Hi Sir Brian,

It will be lame having to walk around with just scabbards again  :( .... I don't see what the problem is with just a hilt.

still a weapon ;)  i believe Sir Edward and Sir Brian have theirs epoxied into the scabbards so they can not be taken out thus its a scabbard with a fancy end ;) Maryland law also says its illegal to carry anything over 3 inches i believe in public etc. too many stupid people do stupid things when alcohol is involved.

Yes, so far they haven't even checked mine at the gate this season. Last year they checked it twice, the first time being rather detailed scrutiny, but when I showed that they could pull with all their strength while I leaned away from the pull with all of mine, and the hilt could not be removed, they allowed it. After that they've either not noticed, or just checked quickly.

It's the inconsistency that bothers me. If it's clearly fake, I don't see what the problem is. Though I suppose they'd make the argument that they can't train all their security guys to know where to draw the line, so it's easier to ban everything.

Silvanus, I'm sorry we missed you! We kept our eyes open all day, but of course it's a large enough site that you can easily end up circling on opposite sides and never spot each other.

We took a group photo on Saturday with all of the armored folks we could muster on short notice.

Yep you've got to have it epoxied into the scabbard. They definately look for that.  ;)
