Football does have its roots in antiquity; to me it is reminiscent of the melee style battles of the old jousts before it became a more civilized (and to me, less exciting) fare.

We also have the most annoying football fans. Though if they all started waving around flails instead of their towels, I'd go for that. ;)

Yup, since 1962, but has been practiced even in colonial times.

It is, sort-of. The version of jousting, is the "jousting games" version, such as lancing a ring. It's not the "full tilting at each other" kind. Also, there's been a strong movement to replace it with Lacrosse as the official sport.
I think last I heard, they compromised and made Lacrosse the official modern sport, and Jousting the official historical sport... or something like that. Might be worth googling.
