has anybody read the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell.

They are set in the time of Alfred the Great.

I am on book five. Very good read.

I've read them all. Pretty good fare, but lately I'm having trouble telling them apart!

I've read or listened to all of them except for the latest.  Yes they do run together a bit, but still are very enjoyable.  I think I like his "Archer's Tale" trilogy even more and "Agincourt" which is a stand alone novel.  These inspired me to write a young readers novel entitled "The Archer's Son."  It will come out in late March 2014 or early April.
My second novel, "The Archer's Son," available now on Amazon Kindle.  Find it at  http://amzn.to/Usavxf

My brother has a trilogy by the same author, but not those books specifically. He read one and liked it, we got him the other 2 for Christmas.

Cornwell's an excellent medieval fiction novelist; his Archer series (Holy Grail), Warlord Chronicles (Arthur) and Saxon Tales (Alfred the Great) are very well written.  Its funny, I used to read Sharpe's Regiment books and only realized that it was the same author after reading the first of the HG series that my wife surprised me with.  The HG series actually has a fourth book...even tho the HG by this point had been found, it uses Thomas as the main character, albeit about a decade after the events in HG series.

Great series to start with...he's probably my current favorite w/regard to medieval fiction, followed closely by Elizabeth Chadwick.
