Longsword fencing with Guy Windsor at WMAW 2009
« on: 2009-10-08, 07:14:25 »
Peter Brusseau got footage of Guy Windsor and I bouting with longswords at WMAW 2009 (which was one of the highlights of the weekend for me). I've uploaded two versions of it.

The first is an annotated version, with slow motion replays and commentary explaining what just happened (well, at least explaining to the best of my memory/interpretation). Of the two versions, its probably the easier to watch, but I *highly* recommend watching the HQ version (otherwise the quality is so low that sometimes the swords can't even be seen):

The other version is the same bout, unedited and unaltered:

Darn it! I have to wait the entire day before I can watch the videos!  :(

(streaming audio/video is restricted on the work network.)  >:(

Very nice! I like the annotated analysis of the fight. If anything, the text sometimes changes a little too rapidly, but I understand there's the 10 minute limit on youtube. :)

That was a great bout to watch from upstairs too. We got a great view of it, and there were some great exchanges. The thing that impressed me about Guy was that he kept fighting well, opponent after opponent. He must have really pushed through the fatigue. It was also dramatic at the end when took off the mask to thank everyone, with blood running down his neck (apparently his earlobe got punched over his glasses, or something to that effect).

Man, every time I watch bouting videos like this, I want to go gear up and fight.

Yes, Guy is an incredibly impressive fencer. I don't know how many bouts in a row he did that night (I believe I was the third challenger of the night), and he'd only pause for some water in between each match.

Its funny, because at the time I totally thought Guy kicked my ass completely. Which was awesome: Guy is such a great fencer, that I was happy to have my butt handed to me. Everyone kept saying to me that it was a very even fight, and I would look at them funny, because I really was giving it my everything and Guy kept hitting me anyway. But reviewing the fight on video as a third person, I'm realizing that maybe it was a lot more even than I thought at the time.

Of course, I also only did a few bouts that night, and each one had a nice break in between. I didn't go bout after bout after bout like Guy did!

Come to class tonight, then! We'll definately be doing some bouting with the synthetic swords at the end.

WOW!  :o

That was an excellent bout! I especially liked the first version that you edited with the comments and
explanations of both your moves which was especially beneficial to ignorant viewers like me!  ;)

Man, we've got to get a sword in your hand so we can trade blows sometime. :) Have you tried contacting the MASHS group over there yet?

Not yet...we've just been too busy with the faire season, but a few more weeks and our weekends
will be free! I noticed though that they changed their Sunday practice time and location so I'll
have a better chance of getting into it this fall and winter.  ;)
