Best thing about it
« on: 2013-08-21, 20:06:11 »
My favorite part about going to renfaires in armor is the look on kids faces and when they say look mommy a real knight.
I got cornered by 3 kids and a swarm of questions asking if i'd slain any bad guys that day.

The happy kids is what really makes it worth it. For some, getting a meet a knight is a huge thrill, and there aren't many knights on the official faire cast, usually. It ends up falling to us, and that's both an honor and a responsibility (in that we want it to be a positive experience).

I had a kid come up and knock on my helmet once. That can be a little disconcerting when you don't see him at first. lol

If you thought that was disconcerting you should ask Sir Edward about intoxicated, lactating mothers!
(ok I took some artistic license with the “lactating” part but that was only to add to the audaciousness!)  ;)

I had a guy at NYRF when in full armored kit ask if he could hit me .... so I looked at him with weirdness ... then said, "Sure. If I can hit you back (wearing a gauntlet)."

We used to do "Whack a Knight" back in the day. Very popular. :)

We call it "Smite the Knight" but same thing. Anyone can combat the knight with foam.

I was a Knightly Pinata for a bunch of kids for 5 or 10 minutes at a demo a couple weeks ago.

Okay, so I can now fully appreciate the thrill of seeing kids go, "Look! A knight!"
I had so many kids come up to me today at the Pittsburgh Fest. They all wanted to touch my mail (in fact, so did a lot of adults ;) ) and get pictures with me. It was a really cool feeling. And seeing their little faces light up when I'd wave at them as they walked by...priceless.

I was never terribly good with kids, but now I kind of can't wait until I get to armor up again just to go make some more kids' days!

It gets even better with two or three knights together. It's hard to walk across the faire site without getting stopped for pictures every two feet. :)
