Things I still need.
« on: 2013-08-19, 19:01:51 »
I know one day when I have more money I will most likely buy the equipment I already have just more combat worthy and historically accurate. But for now some things I steel need which are key is an arming cap, double rap belt which if someone could help me find one I would be grateful, gambeson, boots( I have leather shoes and such in the mean time), elbow and kneeguards, and upper leg padding or armor. I have found a few things and mean to buy them soon, like boots more leg armor and an arming cap, but if there are places that could be recommended to me about buying armor padding that would be great. I also have fencing gear which I use for fencing but its pretty thickly padded stuff, and I know that medieval martial arts places recommend fencing helmets, do you think the body which is about 1/4 of an inch thick and can take a blow from a foil would make a suitable gambeson?

I was going to point you to the sword belt I got, but the link seems to be broken currently:

http://www.realarmorofgod.com/store/html/Products/Historical-Clothing/Medieval-Men/12th-Century-Sword-Belt-806.html

This one is (or was) a double-wrap. Inexpensive, and works pretty well.

EDIT:

It looks like there's a cheaper one at KoA:

http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SNLA6402BR&name=Brown+Leather+Double+Wrap+Sword+Belt

And they have one from GDFB:

If you aren't doing combat, any kind of gambeson is fine. If you're looking for another one, Revival Clothing makes a nice one.

Museum Replicas Limited (MRL) makes a double wrap sword belt. I have one, it works okay with shorter swords, but the sword being attached directly to the belt, I'm not a fan of - though I don't do early armor much yet.

Elbow and knee guards, do you mean the metal pieces? If you want just the single knee/elbow cops, those are somewhat hard to find. If you're lucky, Allan Senefelder (of the now-closed Mercenary's Tailor) will put a set for sale every now and then. You could try sending him a message and see if he'll make you a set.

Boots, Viking Leather Crafts makes a nice set.

You're aiming for around circa 1300, right? Revival Clothing makes a fantastic gambeson, but it's decidedly later in period. Everything changed so rapidly in the 14th century, that the pre-1300 styles began to rapidly vanish in the first quarter of that century. Unfortunately, almost nobody makes the longer styled gambesons that go with mail kits dating to around 1200-1320. I had to have mine custom made (I had Jess Finley of Fuhlen Designs do it).

GDFB makes one that looks the part, but it's so thick and heavy, that it's clearly not meant as an "aketon" that goes under the mail. It's armor by itself.

What I do to cheat, frequently, is to use a long-sleeve linen tunic instead of a gambeson, just to save on heat insulation, and thickness/weight. Not accurate at all, and no armor value, but if it's under the mail, a lot of the time it's not that visible.

You can still cheat with the more 14th/15th century gambesons too, but they're expensive enough that you might not want to do that and chew them up with the mail. :) It's a big judgment call here.

Was it an off-the-peg / pre-made place, or did you have to commission it? And yet no link, either? Tsk tsk.

Gambesons, or surcoats? I was talking about gambesons.

I used to use just a linen shirt as an arming garment; thing with that is you need multiple layers otherwise the imprint of the rings on flesh is what you get.  Not a big deal if you're just wearing it but taking a hit isn't something you'd want to indulge in much.  Just my experience, ymmv.

At least he addressed his post to the right person this time.   8)

Viking Leathercrafts is kind of the go-to store for boots or shoes.  They're broken out by century:

Did you mean to say spurs instead of stirrups?  If you meant spurs, historical spurs can be purchased from Raymond's Quiet Press:

thanks for the links. I like the 13th century shoes on the site, plus they are more in the price range.
