New helm and hammer

Awesome, Ed! (I'd already seen the hammer, so you already knew I liked that. ) Funny, I just ordered a GDFB kettle hat today to go with my "other" harness (the one I plan to blacken). I ordered the other model. David also just ordered one, which is the same one you have here.

I have to say, for the price, it looks remarkably good.

Do you have a plan for a harness to go with the helmet? Or did you buy it just because its cool? (I think many of us can relate to the latter...)

nice! can u post another pic of the helm? are the spangen bands overlapping or all 1 piece? hows the edge where the horizontal band meets the brim? i've had my eye on this one as well as the other version. i dont know which i like more.

I hadn't thought about a kit specifically; I mostly just thought it was cool. But I may build a kit around it.

It looks like the rim and skull portion are one piece dished to have that shape, rather than having the rim welded or riveted on. The spangen bands are all one piece (a large cross, essentially). The fit and finish is on par with the sallets we ordered previously, and it's lined the same way. The rolled edges around the rim almost look like they're rolled over the edge of the leather underneath, but in actuality they just perfectly meet.

Really not bad for the price at all.

It'd be great for a man-at-arms kit.

I'm going to use mine with more complete plate... you don't see too many modern kits that do that. That's David's plan as well, as I understand it.

Yeah, I was starting to think maybe a linen jack with jack chains or something. That would be pretty slick.

Your plate kit with it will be very interesting. So has David started ordering anything yet or is he still planning?

He bought those gauntlets that Arms and Armor had for sale recently on their "Fall Muster" sales page. He also bought a breast plate and kettle hat from GDFB, which probably will arrive within a few days. And he already has the foundation garments, so when those come in, he'll actually have a partial harness.

I ordered my kettle hat within the same order, and I also ordered the Milanese Point-Tied arms (we ordered through work). I think its cool that more people are appreciating the kettle hat.

hehe good deals and padded jacks do not come in the same sentence.   that being said the spangen style kettle would be outdated somewhat for a 15thc jack and jack chains. the kettles are more 1 piece or 1 piece looking tops with large brims.

now your kettle would be awesome say 13thc... with a nice coat of plates over a surcoat over mail then over a gambeson. coif with the mantle under the surcoat. maybe soupcan knees and elbows with splinted greaves and vambracers. i have so been wanting to make that kit.

Cool, that would make a great kit indeed! I've been wanting a coat of plates anyway for my other 13th/14th kit. And this would give me an excuse to get some splinted armor.

how is the wood on that axe handle? i know a friend of mine had a windlass and he hit a shield just goofing around and the shaft snapped! of course we made fun of him hehehe

That seems to be the norm for Windlass hafts, unfortunately. I haven't seen anything recent to make me change that opinion. Still, the head on Ed's warhammer is surprisingly nice when seen up close.
