Pennon
« on: 2014-03-17, 00:34:50 »
So this weekend I did a whole bunch of work. I made a leather sheath for my eating knife, I began work on a wooden core for a scabbard, and I made myself a Norman pennon as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. Thought I'd post some pics to share. (It's actually green, not blue).

Wow! Cool.  ;D These are things I must get around to doing one of these days.

I cheated and used cotton. For starters, they had exactly the colors I wanted in cotton (on sale too!). They did not have colored linen, and even if they did, my skills not quite good enough that I'd risk wasting expensive linen. Though, this one turned out decent (the seems are a bit ugly on the other side), so if I attempt another I may use linen if I can find it.

The best place for linen is http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?goto=showarticles&menu=f&article=2

I use the heavy weight linen for most anything although for a pennon the mid-weight might be okay.

I think you'd want to use silk if you're going to go the period fabric route, but that = $$$$

Linen won't fly nearly as well.

I bear that in mind for the next time I happen upon a large sum of cash and have an itch to make a pennon.
