I could be wrong, but I think there is precedent, just not necessarily for the whole hauberk. I seem to recall seeing some historical pieces that had some brass links at the edges, and one owned by some notable figure that had a diamond (lozengy) pattern. But take it with a grain of salt since I don't know the accuracy of this.

But you know my usual philosophy.. if you like it, do it. :)  But the plain aluminum finish will look just fine too. Can't wait to see it!

Well here is some picts of my new rivetted mail. I knew it was going to be lighter
but omg! :o

The entire haubergeon is only a little heavier than just my steel coif! The sleeves
are not exactly "short" as described but I'll make do.

I'm going to have both the haubergeon and coif anodized in a brass finish since
I want to still have the option of wearing a coif with my first helm.

What do you all think? - Besides finally finding out what they did with all those
old style "flip tops" from the beer and soda cans!  ;)

Hey, it looks great! Yeah, the nice thing about aluminum, anodized or not, is it will retain its finish very well. Don't have to worry about rusting, etc.

I had originally planned on 3/4 sleeves for mine as well, but stopping at the elbow seemed pretty nice. I suppose if you wanted to shorten the sleeves up, you could always pull out some wire cutters and cut off a few rows. I see they made the sleeves fairly generous in diameter to.

I'm sure you can see why I made mine in aluminum instead of steel. The weight is about 1/3 for the same amount of metal, but you knew that, I'm sure. :)

I love the sparkly look that the camera flash creates when the mail is all new an clean. :)

You know, I think I've actually heard of people making mail from soda/beer can tops, and also key rings. It's crazy.

Ice Falcon apparently just restocked a lot of their mail. I'm hoping this means my standard will be in soon...

My standard came today. Its alright, but I'm a little disappointed. I got the kind with the smaller rings, but I didn't realize they came with some sort of modern black coating on them, as if they were dipped in teflon. They also look pretty ahistorical, as they have the same look as the typical mass-produced stuff such as what MRL sells. Yes, I know that pretty much all mass-produced mail isn't going to be completely accurate, but some stuff is definately closer than others, and this one isn't. Oh, well. I suppose if I tumble it in sand, the black may come off, and maybe I'll have something that isn't too bad looking.
