Spent three hours this morning cutting up and punching out four sets of all the strapping ( andarmes and gauige straps ). Punching out over 600 3/16 inch holes one at a time sucks. I need to run out for some contact cement to glue down the fabric backing, next apply the straps, then glue down to leather shield facing. I whould be starting to rawhide some edges the middle of next week I think.

I know we keep getting told that theres " no inflation " by our politicritters but the $8 increase per 4'x8' of 1/8" plywood since last summer and the $20 increase for a side of rawhide since last summer were a bit of a surprise.

Yeah, prices are going up on everything. I think a lot of it is due to increased energy and fuel costs, since a lot of the price goes into transporting the materials these days.

Let me know if I need to throw a little more cash your way to make up for the cost increase of the materials. I'll be happy to do so. I don't want you to be working for free, or at a loss.

Same goes for me too, Allan.

The only reason congress-critters don't think prices are going up is because they keep voting themselves raises above and beyond what the inflation rate is, and they're completely out of touch with reality. Last time I was at home depot a 4'x8' sheet of plywood, I think 1/2", was $45 per sheet! I was considering building an archery lean-to style area that I could use for target practice to teach the youngins how to shoot ... but I saw the price of the plywood and walked away.

Well my sheet metal guys car sh** the bed yesterday and given that my car isn't street legal either, it made my sheet delivery late so I swapped yesterdays plan for this weekends evenings and got all of them, fabriced, strapped, leathered and they are now drying. Should be ready to start rawhiding, Sunday- Monday.

Great job, Allan. Thanks for the update. Let me know if the big image for my lions statant didn't make it to your email. The legs made it here yesterday; I love them! The buckles match the "WMA" arms I got from you, and they fit beautifully over the greaves you made too. Awesome, as always! :)

Well, rawhiding has to wait to start till tonight. I put the first shields worth in the pot yesterday, and it was still a bit stiff last night. The hide they send me was some of the most uniformly thickest they've sent me, nearly all of 6.oz thickness, so its looks like a little more soaking is necessary. The edges of the shields should be pretty damned close to bombproof with this stuff.

Excellent, I guess we just got really lucky. But don't worry, I don't plan to deflect grenades with mine. :)

Yes but is it not a reassurance that if there was ever a need that you could?  ;)

Ulric, you can go ahead at mercenarystailor@hotmail.com. The wood, rawhide, backing fabric, strapping leather, glue are all here, I need to order one more side of facing leather which yours will cover, to get on lione to come in while your baords are in the press, and going through the various stages getting prepped to get the facing leather glued on.

The first late heater, got rawhided tonight. I've got hide in for an early heater tommorow night.
