i am hoping to make a grey/black split to match my shield. although i am uncertain that splits are period during the 1340s so i need to do some research. (anyone got pictures of a split color?) if not it will be black. maybe i can try to find a lion to apllieca on the front of it. (Sir John how did you do your gold lion?) the surcoat will be shorter in teh front and knee length in the back as effigies show, with splits under the armpits that can tie up.

Once the surcoats started getting really short, it became more common to put your heraldry on them. So you can pattern it after your arms if you want, I think.
