Crouch is a tough one to get through...he writes it more like a research paper - so it is very dry and to the point.  I got no joy out of reading it.  I'm going to check out the Duby and Painter books in time...if only to get a better idea of the man.

Personally, I like Chadwick's take on the Marshal...even if it is comprised via esoteric research practices.
