Ist time making buckler. With Pics!
« on: 2011-04-28, 01:01:33 »
OK so I got a 1/2" piece of pine plywood, cut a 16.5" center grip buckler blank out of it, edged it in 1/2" hemp rope, and have faced it in canvass glued down with wood glue.

The handle was cut out of the remainder wood, has been coated in linseed oil.

I put down some watered down wood glue as psuedo-gesso and then painted it.

I will be edging it in light leather or rawhide.

Before the leather edging or boss & handle mounting I will be painting my arms on it.

I  cut out & dished the boss myself from 16ga steel.

This is the 3rd shield I have made from wood and it does seem to get easier every time.

Edit: The boss is 16ga mild steel. This was taken just now after I put it in the oven at 550'F for a while. Took it out, and sprayed some gun oil on it.

You may not be able to see from the pic but the blued color is absolutely gorgeous!

The shield is 17.5 inches before adding the leather edging.

Very nice. I have some shield making projects on the slate for this year too. One of those is going to be covered in canvas much like yours, and I think I'm using my shield boss on that one. I'm also planning a leather covered small shield and a larger leather covered Targe which will use a broken stilleto I have in the center.

That's a neat way to use your heraldry on a round shield. Very nice.

Rawhide edge is clamped on and shrinking down as I type. In just 2 days it should be ready for final securing and handle attachment!

Nice maybe I should modify my current buckler to have dog bone edges.

So now except for the rawhide patch I just put on the leading edge the shield is done!
