Title: Armour Stand
Post by: Sir Rodney on 2011-03-14, 15:42:05
Here are the promised photographs of my armour stand.  As you can see, I’ve used black iron pipe fittings on the lower portion, PVC pipe fittings on the upper portion and a simple plywood base with feet.
The arms are simply held by rope and help the armour hang properly as well as making the attachment of gauntlets easier.
The PVC couplings at the knees are not glued.  This allows for the torso to be removed from the legs so the pants/hose can be put on.
The lower legs have a couple 90 degree bends which allow the shoe/sabaton heels to sit back and appear in-line with the rest of the leg.  I had to move the mountings to the base back a few inches after this modification as the center of gravity changed and the whole thing wanted to tip forward. :o

That looks interesting. I'd like to see it when you have armor on it for comparison.

Check out my Knight Page (http://modernchivalry.org/knights/view/Rodney) at the bottom.  You can see how the arms help give some definition.  The parts can be had at any big box home store or your local hardware store.

Very cool!  Now I am compelled to make one (and to get more armour to hang off it, of course) :)

Well done, Sir Rodney.  If I weren't already having one built, I'd go with this setup.

Very cool. It looks fantastic with the kit on it.

I gotta get myself one of those. My kit is always on the ground folded up under my desk and i'm sure it would look better on a stand.

I have one question, how did you talk your lady into allowing the armor to decorate a corner of your house? No really. I love the stand, and am a bit jealous, there is no way I could do that....ok well in the basement or the attic maybe. Anyway very cool stand!

Thank you Stormdelver. :)

It is indeed my finished basement that is pictured.  Much of my "Medieval Man Cave" decor has been put behind glass in an old china hutch or in the shed since a squire and princess entered the picture. ;)

Ah well, that project fell thru so maybe I'll try my hand at this.  Really need a house w/a garage!!!

That's very cool! My armour just sits in plastic crates when not in use.  :o  Perhaps I should try making a stand like yours!

I wonder if it is possible to make the shoulders slightly angle downwards so that it looks more like when you are wearing it? I'm not sure how one would do this with the stock pieces at Home Depot.

Forgot to ask: How do you attach the gauntlets?

i always tie them on. i have seen people that make wooden plywood arms that have wider spots for teh hands to sit on.

They should have 45* angle pieces. I know the smaller diameter piping does, but I've never looked for the larger diameter ones.

If that's not viable or is too expensive, I made my stands out of 2x4s:

I think I spent $6 in materials, it's easy and takes maybe 15-20 minutes. Nothing more than 2x4s and some screws, and I've used the same style for 4 sets of armor.

how do u get them to attach to the walls like that and not fall? do u not have the same gravity limits as i do?

I make gravity work for me, instead of against me. They're leaning against the wall at a 15* or so angle. Since there's no base, it's easy to maneuver, and once I have the armor on it, I just lean it against the wall. I have some 50 lb clear fishing line that I used to tie the legs around the "hips" area (where the horizontal brace is) to keep them upright, and also to tie the spaulders and arms to the top; there's no actual arms on my frame. I have some 45* shoulders that I put on my original prototype frame, but the armor sat funny; I think I need it for the 14th C armor pictured, since the shoulders are too far "in". I'll be doing that soon, since the armor is off for (hopeful) use soon.

The first one I made (barely visible on the left) for my samurai armor, I put feet on. I realized it was better to forego them, so that I can put sabatons/shoes on them, since there's no "base".

Edit: the arms and spaulders are tied off in an X fashion; left arm crossed over and tied on the right, right over the left. They stay in place well, but I haven't devised a system to attach the gauntlets yet, which I just got a few weeks ago (and the stand is many months old).

hahaqh no i meant cause your picture is sideways ;)

i did a cross bottom, i put a 2x4 out from each side of the vertical one. then i ended up taking the back on off so i could scoot it closer to the wall.  i have 2 small headless nails on each of the shoulders and each side of the horizontal waist 2x4 in order to hold the pauldrons and legs at their arming points

Forgot to ask: How do you attach the gauntlets?

Sir Wolf is correct.  I've drilled a few holes near the termination of the PVC "wrists" allowing paracord ties to secure the gauntlets.

Nice armour stands everyone!  Maybe I should rename this thread "Show us your racks".  On second thought, that title could be misinterpreted outside the armour and weapon community.  ;)

So let it...once they get on here, it will only be their fault if they are disappointed as they expected otherwise.  ;)

Oh no, Sir Edward, they never need help in THAT department.  No, no- I was thinking purely from the corporal punishment point of view.  Just the mere sight of it should be enough to keep most children in line...but there are always the rapscallions- those ones you just have to lace'm in and they'll break but the odd one or two, you might actually have to stretch a bit just so they know it could happen.

Hey, it works man, trust me...sounds harsh, but very effective.  ;)

Impossible, I wear sabatons.  ;)

Please share your armour racks.  You could help save someone else some time and frustration in the future.   I really should have called this thread "Show us your rack".  :)

Thank YOU, Wolf!!!  You can laugh all you want- I'm getting it.  That'll freak out visitors to the house too...lol

Why do I feel like I'd just be playing an adult male's version of Dress-up Barbie?  Ahhh...I don't care, I don't have to build it.  Wonder if it could carry the weight of my armor though...

Actually, think I'll go with this one...that one's taller than me, and the face is freakin me out- can't have that!
