Types of Medieval Cloth?
« on: 2010-05-03, 14:36:24 »
I am contemplating on overhauling my harness a little bit, namely redoing my surcoat in a type of cloth more appropriate to the period of my harness. I would probably focus on just my primary color/metal, i.e. green and yellow. What limited research I conducted via the internet confirmed what I already knew about linen being used, but what other types of cloth were available that would’ve been used in making surcoats?  ???

Primarily Linen, Wool, and possibly silk. And that's pretty much it. :)

Fabrics

    Linen

        * Fabrics - Store.com - Awesome linen at a good price.
        * Fashion Fabrics Club - Great linen quality

    Wool

        * Woolrich Fabrics - Great selection but not the lowest prices; if you need a specific color they likely have it.
        * Fashion Fabrics Club - Often has good light weight wools in stock
        * BBlack and Sons - Good coat weight wool.
        * Denver Fabrics - Good rotating stock.
        * Fabric.com - Hit or miss on their stock.
        * Hamilton Dry Goods - Email first, they don't update their site often.
        * Carolina Calicoes - They have more than is on their website. Email them for what they have is stock. Warning they travel allot and are slow to email back sometimes.

    Hemp

        * Hemp Traders

    Silk

        * Rupert, Gibbon & Spider, Inc.
        * Thai Silks
        * Dharma Trading Co.

i would go for 100% linen from http://www.fabrics-store.com/ say around the 5.3 oz (middle of the road) thickness.
