Templar/Crusader Kite shield.
« on: 2012-05-16, 02:38:44 »
Here's my kite shield (appropriate for hastings through late 12th century)  It was originally a Deepeeka, but I reworked the strapping, added a padded arm rest and painted it. Enjoy!

Looks a bit large for you. Is it?

It's a beast. It is rather light and quick for it's size though. Anyway, it wouldn't be my choice for single combat, but a formation of folks with kite shields would be tough to get through alright  :)   Depends on the situation, so to say  ;)

i made my kite shields with a square strapping. 2 straps horz, 2 straps vert. making a square. that way i could carry it 2 different ways. i will try to remember tonight to take a picture of it.  i have a book that shows all the different ways in the Bayeux tapestry the way the kites were strapped. looks great man good job, i saw your other shields on fb too!

That looks to be just about the right size, actually...the kite shields were meant to be large like that- as mail was the primary means of defense- such a shield would cover you from shoulder to shynbald, as it were.

Thanks guys!  :)

Ha, I'd hardly call myself an expert. Though if anyone would be intrested in making their own, I do have my press and the canvas, so I could help others if they made the trip up here.

And as far as the size, it's not unwieldy. I say it's good.

Nicely done Sir Nathan.  You've been quite busy as of late!

Very nice job!  On all the shields you've posted.  Might have to get my shield press out this weekend...

I think he's already there!  Sir Nathan, your work already exceeds the majority of what I see on an SCA battlefield.  8)
