Last night I started breaking down an old pair of truly horrendous maille gauntlets I purchased a couple of years ago and forgot about in the back of my garb closet. I spent a few hours making a very rough one with only the prospect of spending an additional 6 8 hours completing a set that would still not even come close to these. :-\
For the price of approximately $33.00 before shipping I think Ill save myself the eye and finger strain! ;)
-
hey wow. they need a piece of leather that goes around the outside edge to draw them in.
who is selling them for 33 bucks?
-
Nice find!
They're made by ULF and the part number is ULF-BMSZ-SB. I can only find European distributors as my googlefu is weak this morning. Is there an ULF distributor on this side on the pond?

i bet you could contact KOA or Therion about this item. i mean they carry other GDFB stuff so they might be able to special order it for you. be worth the email!!!

Yeah I noticed they need a bit of lacing on the outer edge, but definitely doable! ;)
The price is actually $29.15 before shipping; shipment from UK is $33.23! :o
For a total cost of $62.40 which really is reasonable IMO.

Unfortunately none that I’ve been able to find. I checked KOA but no joy there. They might special order them but I didn’t inquire. Depending on what the response is from the GDFB folks in the UK I might order them this morning.

Most definitely! But I am under a time constraint at this point but it would definitely be well worth inquiring about if someone else is considering on getting a pair! :)
-
Sir Brian, your boots- where'd you get them from?
-
http://www.getdressedforbattle.co.uk/acatalog/info_M_ULF_BMSZ_SB.html (http://www.getdressedforbattle.co.uk/acatalog/info_M_ULF_BMSZ_SB.html)
I should be getting them in a couple of weeks. If you aren't in a mad rush for them I am sure you
could inquire KOA or TherionArms if they could start carrying them. They look really sweet and
reasonably priced! :)
-
Oh, that's not you wearing those sabatons?
-
What me? Absolutely Not! I wouldn’t be caught dead in those dodgy brown boots! ;)
-
LOL - alrighty then!
-
Wonder how hard it would be to make a pair of these out of riveted maille.
-
Well if you wish Sir Ulrich I could send you my abandoned butted gauntlets/sabatons along with several angled pictures of the GDFB ones when I get them to use as a reference. Riveted would last longer but butted would at least give you a good practice run on figuring how to lay it out. :)
-
Yeah it would give me an idea of how to arrange the rings and whatnot. I don't know any other place other than Icefalcon that sells riveted chausses and I am planning on making my own eventually as the rings offered by GDFB are fairly inexpensive and I got plenty of freetime to do so.
-
Will do then. When I get them I'll post some pictures for you and then you can PM me a maille-ing
address. :)
-
Oh now we're doing puns! lol
-
They look great, you know this in one area I think I would buy as well, I made Sabatons last year and never wore them as I thought they looked like clown shoes (mine were plate). I just dont have "it" with making them, but its almost always a forgotton spot in peoples kits. Thats ok if your a foot soldier (no pun intended), but as a Knight I doubt you would go into battle without protecting your feed from arrows and slashes. Nice find!
-
Stormdelver, did you make that helm in your avatar?
-
Yes I did, my second attempt at a helm. The one thing I regretted...not fitting it first while wearing full armor. It tends to hit my pauldrons....
I had also made an articulated gorget, but due to heat last year I never wore it.
-
Ah, when you turn your head from side to side....I see what you mean now that you've mentioned it. How do you make your armor? How do you get that non-shiny finish?
-
Well that was due to not really wanting to polish it, instead I gave it a brushed finished, but thats gone now as I polished it this winter. The issue was that I had done etchings in the metal and was afraid polishing would ruin the detail, but it actually made it better.
I make armor the old fashion way, a stump, several hammers, a forge (I use a big gas burner), and lots of time...and noise. Its very good therapy, like fighting, its hard to be frustrated after beating metal with a hammer for a couple of hours. I try and use only traditional rivets, I do make my own floating, keyed, and threaded rivets as well, and try to minimise other hardware. I do take advantage of currently availible materials, as they are more readilly availible (I use nylon webbing internally for plate strappings as they do not rot).
-
UPDATE:
Well the final total cost came out to $57.43 and should be here within 7-10 days. :)
-
Can't wait to see'm on you, Sir Brian.
Stormdelver - I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
-
I look forward to seeing them Sir Brian...like I said I think this is a very overlooked area on most all of us, but I always loved your boots, the splints just adde a real look to them.
-
Well the Sabatons arrived today and they went on fairly easily. I can still easily put on and take off my boots with them laced up. Note the additional lacing I had to apply along the bottom with only one crossover near the toe to keep the rest of the sabaton in place. :)

Hey, looking good! You're going to make me envious of how easy it'll be to get in and out of it. My chausses take almost 20 minutes to put on.
-
Nice look!
-
Very cool!
-
Nicely done, Sir Brian! Guess I need to add this to the list of pieces I still need to acquire. Gonna try and avoid the mail chausses by going with plate legs but the feet still need something. I probably should stop with the amalgamated kit and make them into separate period kits and put'm together with more care.
But I don't have the time, money or patience, so I'll be the bastardized knight. lol
-
Ah but Sir William THAT is the very reason why I love the transitional period of armor for the wide variance you are afforded with your kit! ;)
-
Nice, doesn't look too hard to make actually apart from the leather at the top. Makes me wanna change my kit to the transitional period, I'd rather get maille sabatons and plate greaves than full chausses.
-
sweeeet

You are absolutely right and I'm glad you said it...I just need to remember that a Templar would not be armored so (stick with just the maille) and I'll be good. That'll work...and I'll be going with a transitional look for a new jupon I've been waiting to put on.
-
What I don't get is why the knight here in this 1250 illustration has plate greaves:

-
Which Osprey is that from?
-
That is very strange. Dr. Douglas Strong's research of 1,300 effigies suggests that schynbalds don't start appearing until the 1300-1309 decade.
An Analysis of 1300 Effigies Dated Between 1300 and 1450 (http://talbotsfineaccessories.com/armour/effigy/effigy%20analysis.html)
Edit: It appears there is one effigy in the period 1300-1309 that shows "a comprehensive leg harness including a cuisses, knees, greaves and sabatons all worn without articulated joints between the elements."
-
English Medieval Knight 1200-1300, I do know by 1250 they were using coat of plates over maille (or was it integrated into the gambeson?) and by 1290 they had knee protection.
-
its osprey. take w grain of salt hehehe
-
Those books are basically where I get my ideas for my kits and whatnot, along with the Morgan Bible. I just wanna know where I could get the mace thats marked with the number 14 in that pic. Been looking everywhere but cant find one. Better off learning how to make one out of rubber to use as a training weapon.

Isn't there an Australian guy doing castings of mace heads?
He can be found on the AA somewhere I think.

It just occurred to me that IF Sir Edward and his Lady Katherine ever decided to run a day care center they might have a little trouble getting past the home safety inspection for their certification! :D

manning imperial is the guy u seek
-
You sure? The guy I'm thinking of has a Flikr account as a store front.
-
I believe Sir Edward and his Lady would probably prefer to move than try to kidproof that house. LOL

It's the "less" common generally Italian style mace, flanged, specifically.
http://www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/Italian_Flanged_Mace_CD-193.html
That one has some decorative punch-out in it, but looks very similar. It should at least lead you in the right direction by having a more specific name/style.
-
That is one ugly weapon...and the damage it would do, also very ugly, I can see that.

It looks a lot like the MRL "River Thames" mace:

...which is the one Sir Wolf was pointing out on my mace rack:

Well I discovered on my debut outing of the new armor that my current method of securing the sabatons to the toes of my boots was insufficient. I think I'll have to actually stitch a couple of rings onto the sole of my boots and interlace the sabatons to them. :-\
