Title: Just joined the "14th Century Mafia", apparently I'm quite sick...
Post by: Sir James A on 2011-01-15, 16:07:32
http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=123915

...sick because I bought this on a pending refund from my other armor that is 2 months late and "missing", and
...sick because I haven't quite finished my MRL german gothic harness (getting gear from MercTailor for this), and
...sick because I still plan on getting a full 15th century harness from MercTailor, and
...sick because I got 9mm rivited SS voiders (from IceFalcon), and
...sick because I got 2 bags of loose SS rings & rivits (from IceFalcon) to make a skirt, and
...sick because I got another gambeson (from IceFalcon) to attach said skirt and voiders, and
...sick because I'm working on some sketches for display cases I can build from materials I can get at Home Depot.

Yet amongst all of this sickness, I am somehow quite happy. :D

I don't know what to do with the coins, so I donated them to him as a thank you for negotiating on free shipping. I'd rather he use them than they sit in a drawer or box in my house.

see about getting the GDFB guantets and a basenet with aventail too they look like they would go well with this suit

My wallet nearly took off my finger when I paid for this round, so it's sealed for a while. My plan was to see if the Wisby gauntlets from MercTailor match this harness timeframe (I'm thinking yes? 1361 for Wisby would be just a decade or two before this harness). I'll look into the GDFB helmet. Thanks!

Well done. This sale caught my attention because the detailing seems to be very well executed.  I wanted it very much as I'm a touch over 6' but I haven’t been 180 lbs. since high school. ;)

I've noticed the thread that contains your vendor problems and refund attempt.  You have my sincere best wishes for a speedy resolution.  Fortunately, I haven't been in a similar circumstance so I can only guess at your frustration. :(

Oh, sweet, twisted irony.

The box comes tomorrow. And I got an email after I got back from Longpoint last night. The armorer who "borrowed" my money for 5 months and was giving me a refund for the last month, rather than refund me, shipped a package - my gorget and a "rebate" of 1/4 of the amount paid. He said that he is going to work all weekend and see if he can ship the cuirass by Tuesday.

So the kit that I bought with the refund I had been told I could have for a month is arriving. And the refund, well, that isn't arriving. Hopefully the cuirass will though.

Good thing I have a stash of Ramen noodles. And I could stand to lose a few, umm, 25 pounds. :)

That indeed is bitter-sweet. Lots of armor on the way but you'll lack the strength due to starvation to actually wear it!  :D

I suppose congratulations & condolences are in order?  ;)

For those who didn't see the pics on Facebook, this URL should work:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2101915&id=1132478990&l=a13dea6102

Unfortunately, no "wearing" pics yet - I need to exchange my IceFalcon gambeson for one a bit larger (sigh) and then add points to it. I'm hoping to be done by the first weekend in Feb, if all goes well.

Latest picture with the armor on the stand for now. Vambraces from the gothic harness went out to Allan at MercTailor today so I can get some fully enclosed ones, instead of the MRL "half" vambraces. Sorry, I forgot to rotate it before uploading - do the owl-neck thing and it looks normal. :)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/jba3/medieval/gothicand14th.jpg

y longer?

Larger, unfortunately, not longer. Lack of, uh, circumference in the jacket, to properly contain my mid-torso region. AKA, I was too fat for it - seems I ordered based on my waist size. :o

A couple boxes came in the last few days, so it's almost time to start pointing and tweaking. Most of this will be used for the 14th C kit as well as the MRL Gothic kit.

Rivited mail pliers, pointing kits, and leather reinforcement tabs from Historic Enterprises (http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/jba3/medieval/historicenterprises.jpg).

Awl, eyelet setting pliers, and small black eyelets from Brettuns Village (http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/jba3/medieval/brettunsvillage.jpg).

Just need to figure out what to lace the mail to the arming coat/gambeson with, and I should be set. Loose rivited rings are still on backorder from Icefalcon, but I bought 2 boxes, which I'm hoping is enough to make the voiders into full-wrap sleeves, and to also make a skirt. The voiders wrap around my entire wrist with some leftovers, at their current size. Voiders and skirt are for the gothic set - the 14th C set has a 3/4 sleeve shirt of it's own, which is, unfortunately, butted mail - but probably will be replaced in due time.

To finish off the kits, I have the MRL drawstring pants in black (http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-356-drawstring-pants.aspx) and the MRL Low Boots Without Fringe in black (http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-400-low-boots-without-fringe.aspx). I may attempt to make some sabatons myself after the display cases and other projects are done ... hopefully before renn-fest season starts.

The Historic Enterprises rivited mail pliers don't seem to play well with the IceFalcon 9mm stainless rivited rings - I ordered a pair from IceFalcon, and he said they were made specifically for the 9mm rings. The HE pliers work, but the holes are the wrong depth for the rivits I have, and it has 3 hole sets, so adding another one isn't reasonable. I was hoping to have the skirt and arm voiders knocked out a while back, but extended work hours and ~3 months delivery time for the rivited rings has put a substantial damper on it.

I placed an order with Allen at Mercenary's Tailor for a simple 14th cent style breast/back (no faulds or tassets) so that I can wear this harness with either the full hauberk or just the arming coat with arm/skirt voiders. The greaves also didn't close, as I thought they might not, so I ordered a set from Allen as well, at least I can get into kit reasonably soon, then I will work on dishing the existing ones when I have some downtime.

ArmorAndCastings quit taking orders, so I've been hunting for a helmet and gauntlets. I'm leaning towards the GDFB brass trimmed 14th Cent gauntlets from TherionArms, and the GDFB brass trimmed helm too - though Sir Edward recently got one and I don't want to be toooo much of a copycat. ;) I have an arming cap and padded coif to go along with it.

Sabatons are going to be interesting; I received a quote from Halberds@AA, but $485 + shipping nearly floored me. He does FANTASTIC work, but that's a bit past my price range right now.

To keep me happy while I wait, I ordered a 2' x 3' gonfalon with my coat of arms. I'll post pics when it gets here. :D

You mean the Sugarloaf I just got? The jury's still out on that one. It's not very roomy, as my nose presses against the front without adding the coif and arming cap. I need to play around with it a bit, but if it's not as comfy, I may not proceed with my plans on it. We'll see. :) Just haven't had the time to sit down and mess with it yet.

I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do with it. Technically I'm still working on my mid-14th kit, and could probably use the helm with that.

The open-face bascinet w/ aventail I have works, but has problems sharing my head with my glasses. I probably won't use it until I do something about my eyes.... even if that something is just to use disposable contacts while at faire (which won't be a 100% correction since they won't correct my astigmatism).

For my main c.1300 kit, I'll probably still stick with my current great helm.

Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread. Just want to say--- use what you want. Don't let me get in the way. :)

Yep, the one posted on FB. For a solution, I vote for laser eye surgery. I've always wanted laser eyes, like Cyclops of the X-Men. That'd be pretty sweet. :D

If you don't mind, I'd like to try the sugarloaf on and see how the fitment is for me. That would definitely help sway me one way or the other, especially since all I see is the circumference, and that's not much help in guessing fit.

Ah, I didn't know that. I clicked around through their site and saw yours there. Now I'm even MORE excited! And the pencil sketch of mine is done already; I just paid 1/2 this past weekend. It's a shame she doesn't do surcoats. :(

That's exactly the picture I had in mind when I said that, but I went with the X-Men reference since more people would know what I'm talking about and I couldn't remember where I saw that pic.

The banner comes with a wooden bar and rope, so all I had to do was put a nail in the wall and put it up:

The IceFalcon mail pliers arrived Friday, and they are fantastic! I got a bit more than one "length/wrap" row of the skirt done. The pliers are quite tough on the hands, though. I am going to get some rubber tool dip to see if that helps, it will help speed productivity for me - I was sore after a few hours and quit due to the cramping and stiffness.

This is taking MUCH longer than butted rings - I'm guessing I'll have 35-40 hours into this skirt by the time it's finished. After that, it'll be tailoring the voiders (I cheated and bought them pre-made :D), and the kit will be much closer to completion. I'm greatly regretting having not paid that extra $100 to buy the skirt pre-made, but at least I'll have some satisfaction in knowing I made something.

I live in Sterling and work in Charles Town WV. Sir James is the other way around, so we trade places during the day. :)

Ouch on both counts...although I'd imagine your commute probably goes more smoothly than does Sir James' - unless he's found another way besides the Beltway to get there in which case, that'd be all to the good.  I used to commute from Laurel, MD to Herndon, not far from where you live if I'm correct in my rudimentary knowledge of the area - but that was bear enough at 40 miles one way.  At peak times no less (I worked 9a-5p then)...so my shortest commute on record during said hours was 1 hour 40 minutes.  The longest, you ask?  4 hours, 27 minutes...there was a dusting of snow on the ground and traffic just stopped.  Literally.

By the by, Sir Brian.  LOL.  ;)

Making the rivited mail skirt is taking much longer than I anticipated, in part due to my girly computer hands, and in part due to a number of mundane conflicts of time. I ordered a pre-assembled skirt from IceFalcon to match the voiders, and I'll use the rings I have to make a set of half-chausses (since I have cased greaves & plate sabatons), and to tailor the voiders and/or skirt if necessary.

At least I can (hopefully) get the skirt soon, and have the kit almost complete; mostly waiting on the backordered gauntlets (GDFB Churburgs), the breast/back and greaves from Allan at MercTailor, and to get some time for my wife to help me line up where I need to add points to the arming coat for the plate.

A few pics:

I used this to coat (4 times) the plier handles and add at least a little cushion to the grip. The first night I spent 30 minutes closing rings, I both got and opened (ugh) a blister from the rough metal.

I figured that a hauberk with 50,000 rings would need something like 250,000-300,000 separate actions to make.

Remember, in period labor was cheap and materials were expensive, plus you didn't have just one guy making the shirt by hand.

Good on you for doing it though!

Plasti-Dip...I know guys who are using it on cars- I've seen sets of rims that're coated in PD and they look pretty good- at least in pictures.  These guys swear it looks good up close too.  Been thinking of blacking out some pieces on my car.

I just picked up a can of plasti-dip last week.  It's a growing fashion in the SCA to coat our non-historical axe/polearm heads in the stuff for a better look.  Two or three thinned coats of the black finished off with a coat mixed w/ silver paint does the trick.

That's stuff is extremely useful isn't it?  Gonna keep that in mind too...maybe I'll do a helm or two, eh?

It comes right off if you pick at it long enough, or so I'm told.

The GDFB gauntlets arrived today, even though they were back ordered til June. I love when a time vortex works in my favor!

The quality is actually very good for only being $104 shipped. And they fit my hands fairly well. Much, much better than those churburg sabatons. I think all those will be good for is as a pattern example. If they had a better rear plate, they would actually be decent, but that wild flare makes them look completely off.

The articulation of the gauntlets isn't terrible, but the leather strapping is odd; I'll post pics later if I get a chance, but the strap hangs over each finger both on the sides and the tips, and is just "long" on all sides. Maybe we're supposed to trim them; I know I am going to.

Again, as simply dress/show gauntlets, and not WMA competition gauntlets, they're quite acceptable for the price.

The mail skirt is backordered until June/July, and I still haven't chosen a helmet, but this kit is getting close to complete.
