Title: Two is my limit!?
Post by: Sir Brian on 2009-10-15, 20:13:33
Apparently TWO Irish coffees is my limit.  :D

I decided to "experiment" with a couple of different Irish coffee recipes in preparation for our little
tailgate party at the MDRF this Sunday morning and after trying two different ones I have a couple
of sheets into the wind you might say...although apparently I can still type while slightly toasted!  ;)

Wow, must be some strong stuff.

You know, I've never been one to drink much of anything. But I've discovered recently that people have simply been putting the wrong drinks in front of me for all these years. When I was growing up, we had nothing but red wines in the house. Turns out I favor whites, or mead. Everyone loves beer, but I don't. Give me a cider, and I'm happy. People would have me taste scotch, or ouzo (yick!). But I'm finding I'm liking certain liqueur mixes.

I have no idea where my limit is. I'm too much of a noob. :)

Irish coffee is pretty simple...one part irish whiskey (80 proof) and two parts coffee. One (or more)
tablespoons of sugar and top off with heavy cream or whip cream...turns out it is much better with
the whip cream...hence the second drink!  ;)

That sounds interesting. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I'll try most things once.

That's ironic because I always remember that is also one of my rules the morning after!  :D

The morning after, of course...

I don't drink when I'm in armor usually, beyond the occasional mead or ale, but when I am drinking, I prefer Johnnie Walker Black, a scotch blend for those that aren't familiar.  Tried the single malts, not quite my thing but I can drink'm; unlike bourbon or whiskey which I cannot.

Johnnie Walker Black eh? I'm not sure if I tried that or not in recent years, unless of course Sir Andrew has been putting it in his flask then I'd say yes...One of these days he's going to get me good and have it loaded with some ungodly concoction with the same octane level of jet fuel.  :D

It's a smooth blend; some of the other blends, like Dewars or Chivas Regal are a touch too harsh on the backend for my taste.  To drink singlemalt, it seems like you need to take a course on it first...all this talk about oak back, peaty start or coal finish or whatever...just give me a drink, man!  LOL

I was in Rip's, talking with the owner/manager (of the liquor store part anyway) and he talked me into getting a bottle of McLellan singlemalt, 12 year old.  It was ok...and actually cheaper than my usual JWB but it had a bite to it that I don't care for.  Guess I could try some of the others, have had Glenfiddich before and it was awful (to me, but then, it was 10 years ago in a Scotch bar, maybe they watered it down, I dunno), Glenlivet I do not remember; MacAllan...don't remember how that tastes either.

A couple years ago I ran into a few Scotsmen at the MDRF, one of them had a delightful coffee/tequila concoction in his flask that he shared w/me and the wife...that was Patron XO; really good stuff.  Sir Brian, you might want to give it a try in lieu of the Irish whiskey, it'll be smoother no doubt.  Really coffee-ish too I'd guess; we were at Guapo's one evening and the manager there created an after-dinner coffee that I'm sure featured Patron XO and it was delish!

Shame on you, Sir Brian, and shame on you, Paladin, for even suggesting we stray from our beloved singlemalts! Lol! Actually, what you're tasting in the Glenfiddich is the peat smoke they use in the barrels. I have to really be in the mood for a sip of it here or there. Sir Brian and I usually partake of Glenmorangie or Glengoyne, of which Sir Brian purchased us an excellent bottle of 17 year that went down smooth as silk. Usually we partake of Crown Royal and an even more recent discovery, Crown Royal Black Label....ahhh..... :D

LOL

I knew there had to be at least one among us who would take issue with my commentary on singlemalt.  I plead ignorance, Sir Andrew, on the finer points of the singlemalt - Glenmorangie is but a name to me, but I do recognize it.  17 year, smooth as silk, eh?

Kudos on the peat, that's dirt, right?  lol

Crown Royal...whiskey, right?  I've never tasted one I liked...me and Jack Daniels never got along, no sir.

Crown Royal is a blend of Canadian Whiskies...Jack Daniels is a sour mash and I can't deal with it either.Too rough of a taste for my palate and stomach! ;)

Same for me. Jim Beam is even worse IMO ~ if I was to ever taste napalm, I suspect it would taste like Jim Beam.  :D

LOL, yea, definitely not a bourbon man either.  I never met one I liked yet.  I may have to give Crown Royal a try...long as its not like JD, I think I'll be ok.

Glenmorangie is smooth as silk, and was my favorite until I tried Macallan 17 (& 24).  Smokey and robust, it's like fillet mignon in a glass. 8)

If you like smooth then look no further than a good Irish whisky. I suggest a nice malt, Jamesons or even a Bushmills.... no less than  16 years old of course  ;)

I'll have to try that...my wife ordered me a custom flask for our anniversary and I'll have to try a wide assortment of liquors until I find the kind best suited for the flask! - It'll be a tough job but I'm determined to see it through!  :D
