my mom has a Toshiba laptop. you start it up, it says toshiba and then nothing. the screen has power and there is a lil white dot in the upper left hand corner. but thats it. it does not fully load up.
it was bought with windows vista, but we had it loaded with xp form the factory when we ordered it, but they put a vista number on teh bottom of it. it did not come with a recovery disc.
help?

If it's getting stuck in POST, then something is pretty heavily hosed. If it were a desktop, I'd consider resetting the BIOS settings (you know, pull the battery from the motherboard). Otherwise you may have a bad motherboard, bad memory, heat-damaged CPU, etc, etc.
If it's getting just past the POST, but not booting the OS, then you may have a bad or corrupted hard drive. If it's just corrupted, reinstalling Windows should work. If the drive is bad, you need a replacement.

ok,. pulled the battery off, and then put it back in. and it restarted and everything came up!!!

i do see where it says it has a vprot.exe corrupt file. says i need to do something in chkdsk utility.
what is that?
-
ok, ran the avg. it showed a broken/corrupt file.
now restarted the comp and running the chkdsk. sigh........ takes so long. finally 49% 5of5 lol
-
Glad it's starting to come together. :)

How old is it? My Dad had a Toshiba...a year after he bought it, started having problems. Their tech support (at the time this was several years ago) sucked.
-
welp i came back to it and i got no pop ups. evidently that vprot.exe is a avg toolbar file. so i will be giving my mom back this computer(i;m typing on it now)
-
Good job. We'll make a techie out of you yet! ;)

got the laptops all figured out. moms stole my IP so i had to go and change it all manually lol.

Also Toshiba's have overheating issues. Did you clean the fan & heatsink out?
