Those who went to DoK already know this but when I was at DoK, I was at the Chaucer awards area, where I saw this viking reenactor by the name of Jesse Bailey, I commented on his kit saying he had rather nice maille (riveted with round rings and flat punched rings) So we started talking about maille, he said he had a coif by Erik D Schmid, I was like "I want to see that" He also said he was interested in selling it. I was like "for how much" He said 300 bucks. I knew I couldnt pass that up so I payed him 100 on the spot and payed the rest on paypal when I came home. Needless to say I despise my current maille now, this maille is smooth and does NOT poke or cut me at all. It's round ring wedge riveted, but late for the early 13th century but this kind of maille I was not gonna pass up. It fits MUCH better than a normal indian made coif and doesnt cut my face up when I put it on. Plus it doesnt have a neck opening.
Upclose of the rings:

Heres a pic of me wearing it:

Needless to say getting this was a huge surprise and I really am happy about it. I never thought I would actually get to own this kind of maille, or even see it in person. He also told me this was the same coif in Erik's avatar on the Maille Artisans International league and it saw a lot of combat including that at Hastings in 2006.

Sweet acquisition and congratulations! Most fortuitous indeed! :)
-
ahaha you got jesse's coif? awesome. ive known jesse for years!!! he used to have a hull hauberk with mittens and integrated coif back in the day. he and wendy are great people and he gave you one heck of a deal!
-
A Schmid coif? Glad you nabbed that...I would love to own some of his work!
-
Yes indeed, it was a very nice acquisition!

I first saw that you acquired this over on MyArmoury forums. I am so jealous you got a coif made by THE MAN!! Let alone what a smoking deal you got for it too! Mr. Schmid's work has been the go-to manual for me making my mail right now. Any chance can you post up some really good hi-def pics of the links on the peined side (the outside)? It's okay if it goes to a link too, I just want to get a really good look at them as I work on mine.
I've already made a compromise with my dome riveted mail as I can't fess up the money for the solid punch rings. It'd cost me nearly $600 for 25,000 solid punch rings as that's still cheaper because of bulk rate than getting 18,000 and they're still not correct enough to warrant it.
But if I can get my rivets on the pein side to look even close to right, it'd be a win for me. I'm trying to get mine as close to good as I can. I also saw on the MyArmoury forums that the peined side of wedge riveted mail looks almost identical to dome riveted, and I already have a great pic of an archaeological original 12th century mail for the inside.
thanks bud!
so jealous lol

There you go, 2 high def pics of how my riveted rings look. It's wedge riveted not dome riveted though, round ringed too, which I have never seen any commercially available maille thats round ring wedge riveted.
-
Thanks Sir Ulrich! Those are just the pics I needed. Is it okay if I post them on my pinterest board? That's basically become my virtual hard-drive for all my research 8) I kept filling up my externals before I found that place lol

If it doesn't say "flat ring riveted", it's round ring. It isn't as common as flat ring since it's harder (more time consuming) to make, but there's at least a couple places that I know of that make it. KOA has some (through GDFB I think).

Go ahead and save the pics I dont mind.
Anyway, I was saying round ring wedge riveted. There is round ring dome riveted but I never saw round ring wedge riveted maille offered ANYWHERE. The rings for this maille are small too, I dont know if they're 6MM but they look 7MM I think.

Ah, sorry, I missed that you said wedge + round ring, I can't think of anywhere I've seen that off the top of my head. It's definitely a very nice coif.
-
Yeah it cost me a little more than an Icefalcon 6MM coif. Gonna be hard to find chausses and a hauberk to match it though. I can dream on about getting that though, maybe once Cap-a-Pie offers more historical maille I'll order from them. I did try to email Erik about it but didnt get a response back.

Speaking of new acquisitions, check this beauty out ....

Nice, I was looking at that guys stuff earlier, I was thinking of getting a coat of plates off of him possibly.
-
Dane, did you have him put in the perf-plate for the eyes? Been lookin at that very one myself. It wouldn't pass muster for the period police (its sized to be worn by itself, unlike the original which was built to be worn over a helm and maille coif), but it is a solid helm by a respected armorer. I have a coat of plates and matching gorget that I picked up a few months back, solid and well built.
-
No. I left those out to make it more authentic & be worn with a rivoted maille coif as opposed to aventail & bascinet.
