Marching Through Time (MTT) April 16-17, 2011

Marietta Mansion 5626 Bell Station Road Glenn Dale, Md. 20769

Spend the day at our annual multi-period living history encampment including re-enactors from 1st century Romans through 20th century World War II and more. Demonstrations include camp and domestic life, cooking, crafts, weaponry, and military drills. Also featuring period merchants and food. No pets please. Free parking at Glenn Dale Community Center with continuous shuttle service to event.

This is a great event for people with an interest in history. Wolf and myself will be portraying archers in Lord Grey's Retinue.

Funny thing is, this is like right around the corner from me and I only heard about it last year, just after it occurred, on here actually.  I'm looking forward to this...

Sir James, that link did not work for me.

I added the date April 16-17, 2011

In two weeks...think I'll bring the family; is there a cover charge or anything we need to be aware of?

There is a fee but I cannot recall how much (as I am always a reenactor on site) I think between $5-$12 per person at the most.

I found the new website for the house http://www.pgparks.com/places/eleganthistoric/marietta_events.html however no mention of the cost on there.

Regrettably I won't be able to make it this year...again! This event seems to always be on the same weekend we plan to go to NCRF!  :-\

I just read that there will be no fee to enter this year as the house is closed for renovation. It seems like a reliable source from the county government.

In the past the parking has been off site except for handicapped parking; they use a bus to shuttle people back and forth from a church down the street. I assume they will do the same this year.

Did you just say "reliable" and "government" in the same sentence? :D

The weekend is still a tossup on if I'll be in town or not, but I'll try to make it out if I can.

Yea, I went on Sunday- it was great meeting Sirs Wolf and James (Barker) - not to mention the collection of arms and armor you fellows brought with you.  Initially, I thought I'd missed it (thought it was just the one day, Saturday, which I spent the ENTIRE day on the road going to pick up my daughter; 6 hours to get to Richmond- the return trip took less than 2 hours, go figure!)

I have to say, the attention to detail was incredible...it is one thing to read about how things were back then and another to see an accurate representation.  I was tempted to abscond with the contents of a couple of those cookpots around...everyone was in period garb according to their respective era.  It wasn't as off-putting as I thought it would be to see 20th century soldiery mixed in with Roman, medieval and near-Renaissance re-enactors but they pretty much kept them separated - personally I feel the pre-20th C performers should've been in the upper field front and center but that's just my take on it.

Let me see, the ambience was great, I did get to hear some demonstrations (musket fire, cannon fire) but I missed the skirmish between Lord Grey's retinue and those in the other camp, their leader had a pristine suit of armor that was definitely drool-worthy...so was his squire's come to think on it.

The pics are forthcoming, Sir Wolf- I uploaded them to the shared drive at home but I didn't have time to get them up on PB- I'll try to get them on there tonight.  I did take some good shots...a lot more than I thought I had.  I thought I'd only taken like 5 but there were quite a few more.

The ENEMY encampment.  lol

Two of the principles in the other encampment - the one w/out the helmet is the Lord commander of the ENEMY, the helmed one is his Squire.  LOVE their armour.

It seems his Lordship needed to be trussed up again.

Assorted polearms.

Another shot of Lord Grey's encampment.

More assorted medievalists.

And their cookfire (which I found out they actually make what they eat and some actually slept onsite, cool or what?!?)

The Roman encampment.

I didn't really take any pictures of the more modern presentations (18-20th Century soldiery, weapons and vehicles) as I'm not really interested in those and if you are, I apologize, maybe next time.  That's all folks!  Hope you enjoy.

Great pictures. The Romans are Legio XX, the Vikings are part of a small group that used to be part of Markland, the 14th century camp is La Belle Campaign, we are Lord Grey's Retinue and the 15th century group next to us is Squires Camp, and the Landsknechts are 3 smaller groups but the main body is Das TeufelsAlpdrücken Fähnlein (The Devils' Nightmare Regiment) which also works at the MD faire.

I absolutely love Will MacLean's kit.  8)

Awestruck, I think is the best way to describe my reaction when I received 1381: The Peel Affinity (http://www.myarmoury.com/books/item.0980072603.html) for a Christmas gift.  "William Cressy" arming for battle and William vs. Guichard d'Ales in a Deed of Arms are two of my favorite sections.

I hope that someday my kit will be as cool, and accurate, as his.  His blog (http://willscommonplacebook.blogspot.com/) is well worth a read.
